GOOGLE PUT MORE LINKS INSIDE ITS AI ANSWERS. HERE IS HOW TO BE ONE OF THEM.

On October 15, 2026, Search Engine Roundtable reported that Google updated how links appear in AI Mode and AI Overviews: more links inside the answer text, and a prominent spot for one or two links at the top for some tasks. Those links point to pages that answer the question. Here is how to make your service pages clear enough to be one of them.

AT A GLANCE

By Conqueror Capital · Published

The short answer: Put the direct answer in the first two sentences of each service page, use the words customers use (including the towns you serve), and keep prices, hours and service areas current on the page itself. Google says pages in AI features follow the same best practices as normal search, so clear, helpful pages are the target. Nobody can guarantee a link.

WHAT GOOGLE CHANGED

october 2026

Google's Nick Fox announced the update. According to Search Engine Roundtable, AI Mode and AI Overviews now include more links inside the response, a top section that highlights one or two links for certain tasks, news carousels for timely topics, image thumbnails in the "Dive Deeper" section, and clickable publisher and creator names on videos.1

What Google did not add: click data. Search Engine Roundtable noted that Google still does not show site owners how many clicks come from these AI answers, and that Google says it will introduce more metrics over time.1

WHY CLEAR PAGES GET THE LINK

answer first

An AI answer is built to respond to a question. When it links a page, the page should back up what the answer says. A service page that opens with a long story about the company, and only mentions the service in paragraph five, is hard to use for that.

Google's guidance for AI features does not list special requirements. It points site owners to the same fundamentals as normal search: people-first content, pages Google can crawl and index, important content in text, and structured data that matches what is visible on the page.2

THREE HABITS FOR EVERY SERVICE PAGE

do these first
  1. Answer in the first two sentences. Say what the service is, who it is for and where you offer it. "We repair and replace residential water heaters in [town] and nearby areas, including same-week installs." Then explain.
  2. Use customer words. If customers say "AC not cooling", use that phrase, not only "HVAC diagnostics". Name the towns and neighbourhoods you really serve.
  3. Keep the facts on the page current. Hours, service areas, what is included and how to book. If you show prices, keep them accurate. Old facts are a reason to skip a page.

Then link related pages together so each one is easy to reach. Our service area pages guide shows how.

VAGUE VS CLEAR: ONE PARAGRAPH

an example

Vague: "For years we have been proud to deliver excellence to our valued customers. Our team is passionate about quality and service."

Clear: "We clean and repair gutters for homes in [town] and [town]. Most visits take under a day. Call or book online to get a time."

The clear version answers who, what, where and how to book. It is also easier for a person to read on a phone, which is reason enough to write it that way.

HOW TO TELL IF IT IS WORKING

without click data

Because Google does not report clicks from AI answers separately,1 measure what you can control: calls, form fills and bookings by page. Tag your call button and forms so you know which page started each lead. Our guide on tracking where customers come from walks through simple setups, and Search Console still shows overall search clicks per page.

FOR MID-SIZE AND ENTERPRISE SITES

scale and consistency

Larger sites usually have the opposite problem from small ones: too many pages that half-answer the same question.

  • One clear page per question or service. Merge near-duplicate pages so one strong page carries the answer.
  • One page per location with its own address, hours and services, so an answer about a town can link the right branch.
  • Keep structured data matched to the visible page across templates, and review it after every redesign.

Google added more links inside AI Mode and AI Overview answers and a top spot that highlights one or two links for certain tasks, Search Engine Roundtable reported on October 15, 2026.
