ChatGPT Names Few Local Businesses: What to Do
ChatGPT names far fewer local businesses than Google's map results do, and Conqueror Capital's advice to every business, from one shop to a national brand, is the same: make your website and Google listing easy for AI tools to read and quote. A study published in January 2026 found ChatGPT recommended 1.2% of the brand locations it measured, against an average 35.9% appearance rate in Google's local 3-pack. Here is what that study covered, what it did not, and what to check.
AT A GLANCE
By Conqueror Capital · Published
The short answer: SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index looked at more than 350,000 locations of 2,751 multi-location brands and found ChatGPT recommended 1.2% of brand locations, while the same brands appeared in Google's local 3-pack at an average rate of 35.9%. At the same time, BrightLocal's 2026 survey found 45% of consumers used ChatGPT or similar AI tools for local recommendations, up from 6% a year earlier. AI answers are a short list. The basics that help you get on it are the same ones Google lists for its own AI features: clear text on your pages, an up-to-date Business Profile and pages Google can index.
WHAT THE STUDY FOUND
SOCi, a company that sells local marketing software to multi-location brands, published its 2026 Local Visibility Index on January 28, 2026. It says it analysed "more than 350,000 locations across 2,751 multi-location brands" and found that "ChatGPT recommends just 1.2% of brand locations, compared to an average 35.9% appearance rate in Google's local 3-Pack."1
SOCi also reports that locations recommended by ChatGPT average 4.3-star ratings, and it reads that as a sign that reviews weigh heavily in which businesses AI tools name.1
Two limits are worth keeping in mind. The study measured locations of multi-location brands, not independent businesses, so the numbers may not carry over to a single shop. And it reports what ChatGPT named, not why. Nobody outside OpenAI can say exactly how ChatGPT picks a business, so treat any checklist that claims to know the formula with care.
WHY IT MATTERS ANYWAY
A short list would matter less if few people used it. BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, a panel of 1,002 US adults, found that use of ChatGPT and other generative AI tools for local recommendations rose "from 6% last year to 45%", making it the third most popular source of business recommendations.2
Put the two findings together and the picture is simple: more customers ask AI tools for a recommendation, and those tools name only a handful of businesses. Being findable on Google Maps does not mean you are on the AI short list.
WHAT TO CHECK ON YOUR WEBSITE AND LISTING
Google is open about what its own AI features need. Its guidance says there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary," and that a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet to appear as a supporting link.3 Its list of good practices includes:
- Making sure important content is available in textual form, not only inside images or videos.3
- Checking that your Merchant Center and Business Profile information is up to date.3
- Making sure structured data matches the visible text on the page.3
Google also says you don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema markup to appear in these features.3 For a local business, that turns into a short list:
- One clear page per main service, opening with a plain sentence that says what you do and where.
- Name, address, phone and hours in text, the same on your website, your Google listing and your other profiles. Our NAP consistency guide covers the cleanup.
- Real answers to real questions in a short FAQ on each service page.
- Recent reviews, with replies. They help customers whatever the AI tools do with them.
SMALL, MID-SIZE AND ENTERPRISE
Small businesses: start with your homepage and your top service page. If a stranger cannot tell in one sentence what you do and which town you serve, an AI tool may not be able to either.
Mid-size businesses: give each service its own page instead of one long list, and keep one person in charge of hours, phone numbers and service names so the website and the listing never drift apart.
Multi-location and enterprise brands: this study was about you. Every location needs its own page with its own address, hours and local details, and its own up-to-date Business Profile, kept from one source of truth. Review ratings by location, not only the brand average, because the study links recommended locations to their own ratings. Our guide to Business Profiles for multiple locations covers the setup, or see how we work with mid-size and enterprise teams.
FAQ
How often does ChatGPT recommend local businesses?
SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index found ChatGPT recommended 1.2% of the multi-location brand locations it measured, against an average 35.9% appearance rate in Google's local 3-pack.
Do many customers use AI to find local businesses?
BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 found 45% of consumers used ChatGPT or other generative AI tools for local recommendations, up from 6% the year before.
Do I need special code or an AI file to appear in AI answers?
For Google's AI features, no. Google says there are no additional requirements and no special schema or AI text files needed; pages must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet.
What can a local business do first?
Put your main services, town, address, phone and hours in plain text on your website, keep your Google Business Profile up to date and identical to the site, and answer common questions on each service page.
Does this study apply to single-location businesses?
Not directly. SOCi measured locations of multi-location brands, so treat the numbers as a signal of how selective AI answers are, not as a figure for an independent business.
