YOUR CHATGPT TRAFFIC DROPPED AND DIRECT WENT UP? CHECK BEFORE YOU REPORT IT.
On October 14, 2026, Search Engine Roundtable reported that ChatGPT links had stopped carrying the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag that tells analytics tools a visit came from ChatGPT. A day later it updated the story: the tag was back, and the change was described as a bug. The lesson outlasts the bug. Any source that depends on a tag can vanish from your reports overnight.
AT A GLANCE

The short answer: If AI referral visits fell while direct visits rose on the same pages and dates, the visits probably did not disappear; they were filed as direct. Compare the two side by side, look at pages that mostly AI answers send people to, and add a "How did you hear about us?" field to every form so you have a source that does not depend on anyone's tags.
WHAT HAPPENED
Search Engine Roundtable reported that, about a week after a new ChatGPT model release, ChatGPT began opening links in a way that passed no referrer and dropped the ?utm_source=chatgpt.com tag.1 Without either, an analytics tool has nothing to say where the visit came from, so it files it as direct traffic.
An analysis by Adobe, cited in the report, found ChatGPT visits falling while direct visits rose on the same pages, and noted that the new direct visitors behaved like ChatGPT visitors.1 On October 15 the report was updated: ChatGPT was tagging its links with utm_source=chatgpt.com again, and the change was described as a bug.1
WHY THIS MATTERS EVEN AFTER THE FIX
For roughly a week, some AI visits were probably counted as direct. If you report monthly, October's AI numbers may look lower than they were. More importantly, the same thing can happen again with any platform that relies on a tag added to its links. A report that says "AI traffic fell" can lead to the wrong decision if nobody checks where the visits went.
THREE CHECKS BEFORE YOU REPORT AN AI TRAFFIC DROP
- Compare AI referral visits and direct visits on the same pages and the same dates. If one falls as the other rises, the visits were probably relabelled, not lost.
- Look at pages that mostly AI answers send people to. Deep guides and FAQ pages rarely get typed in by hand. A jump in direct visits to those pages is a clue.
- Add a note to your reports for the dates affected, so nobody compares October with September without the context.

THE CHECK THAT DOES NOT DEPEND ON TAGS
Add a "How did you hear about us?" field to every contact and booking form, with options such as Google search, Google Maps, an AI assistant like ChatGPT, social media, a referral and other. Ask the same question on the phone and write the answer down.
It is not perfect: people forget, and some pick the first option. But it gives you a second view that no platform change can switch off. When the analytics and the answers disagree, that is worth looking into. Our earlier post on tracking where customers come from covers call tracking and form fields in more detail.
FOR MID-SIZE AND ENTERPRISE TEAMS
Larger teams often report AI traffic to leadership as its own line. A few habits keep those numbers trustworthy:
- Keep a change log of platform and tracking changes next to your dashboards.
- Report AI and direct together on key landing pages, so a relabelling shows up as a shift, not a loss.
- Join analytics with CRM data, including the self-reported source, so you judge channels by customers, not only by visits.

FAQ
Why is my ChatGPT traffic showing as direct?
If a ChatGPT link passes no referrer and no utm_source tag, analytics tools cannot tell where the visit came from and file it as direct traffic.
Did ChatGPT stop adding utm_source=chatgpt.com?
For about a week in October 2026, ChatGPT links appeared to drop the tag. Search Engine Roundtable updated its report on October 15 to say the tagging was back and the change was described as a bug.
How can I tell if AI visits were counted as direct?
Compare AI referral and direct visits on the same pages and dates. If one fell as the other rose, the visits were probably relabelled rather than lost.
What is the most reliable way to know where customers come from?
Combine analytics with a "How did you hear about us?" question on every form and phone call, so you have a source that does not depend on tags.
