DID YOUR ADS CAUSE THE SALE? GOOGLE ADS NOW LETS YOU TEST IT YOURSELF.

Search Engine Roundtable reported on October 8, 2026 that Google Ads advertisers can now set up Conversion Lift measurement themselves. Until now, a Google representative had to set it up. A lift study is the cleanest way to answer the question every owner asks about advertising: would those sales have happened anyway? It has entry requirements, though, and most small accounts will not meet them yet.

AT A GLANCE

By Conqueror Capital · Published

The short answer: Conversion Lift compares people who could see your ads with people who could not, so you can see how many conversions the ads actually caused. It is now self-service, but it needs at least 1,000 observed conversions and a minimum campaign budget of $5,000 USD. If you are below that, the useful step is to make your call and form tracking reliable first.

WHAT CHANGED

reported October 8, 2026

Search Engine Roundtable reported that Google Ads now lets advertisers set up Conversion Lift measurement themselves, where previously a Google representative was required.1

According to the same report, the self-service setup covers Display, Search, Video, Demand Gen, App and Performance Max campaigns. App campaigns targeting iOS and Travel Ads are not supported.1

WHAT A LIFT STUDY MEASURES

in plain English

Most ad reports count conversions that happened after someone saw or clicked an ad. That is useful, but it cannot tell you whether the person would have called or bought anyway. A returning customer who searches your business name and clicks your ad was probably going to find you regardless.

A lift study splits people into two groups. One group can be shown your ads. The other, a holdout group, is not. Comparing what each group does gives an estimate of the conversions the ads caused, not just the ones they were near. That difference is the "lift".

It answers a different question from your normal conversion column, so treat it as a check on your reporting, not a replacement for it.

WHO QUALIFIES

the requirements

Search Engine Roundtable lists these requirements for the self-service version:1

  • At least 1,000 observed conversions. Conversions with supplementary data do not count towards that minimum.
  • A minimum campaign budget of $5,000 USD.
  • At least one conversion action that is compatible with Conversion Lift.
  • A campaign can be part of only one study at a time, whether Brand Lift, Search Lift or Conversion Lift. Remove it from an existing study before adding it to a new one.

Requirements like these change, so check the current figures in your Google Ads account before planning a study.

IF YOU ARE A SMALL BUSINESS

below the threshold

Many local businesses will not reach those minimums yet. The lesson still applies: you can only judge advertising if conversions are counted properly in the first place. Before worrying about lift, make sure these basics are right:

  • Calls are tracked. For most local businesses the phone is the main lead source. Our guide to tracking phone calls from Google covers the options.
  • Forms are tracked once. Each enquiry should count as one conversion, not one per page reload.
  • Leads are matched to jobs. Compare the leads Google reports with the jobs you actually booked. Our post on tracking where customers come from shows a simple way to do it.
  • Brand searches are separated. Report searches for your own business name apart from new-customer searches, so the numbers are not flattered by people who already knew you.

IF YOU QUALIFY: BEFORE YOU RUN A STUDY

mid-size advertisers
  • Write down the question first. For example: does our Performance Max campaign bring in customers we would not have reached through search on our name?
  • Pick one campaign and leave it alone. Large changes to budget, targeting or creative during the study make the result harder to read.
  • Check the conversion action. Measure the action that matters to the business, such as a booked call or a purchase, rather than a page view.
  • Agree in advance what you will do with the answer. If lift is low, will you cut budget, change the campaign, or test again? Deciding before the result arrives keeps the study honest.

WHAT CHANGES FOR MULTI-LOCATION AND ENTERPRISE ADVERTISERS

more campaigns, more overlap

Larger accounts are where lift studies earn their keep, because more budget means more room for ads to take credit for sales that would have happened anyway.

  • Plan a study calendar. Because a campaign can sit in only one study at a time, schedule Brand Lift, Search Lift and Conversion Lift tests so they do not block each other.
  • Test by market or region where it makes sense. A result from one market may not hold in another with different competition.
  • Share results with finance. Lift estimates are a better basis for budget conversations than platform-reported conversions alone.
  • Keep one owner. Someone should keep a log of every study, its question, dates and outcome, so the learning survives staff and agency changes.
