MYTH: NOTHING ON YOUR GOOGLE LISTING CHANGES UNLESS YOU CHANGE IT.
Your Google Business Profile is not only yours to edit. Google can receive suggested edits from users, and its help page says that once you are notified, you have 4 days to accept or reject a suggestion. If you don't respond, Google may publish the change when other public information, such as your website, supports it.
AT A GLANCE

The short answer: Read your Business Profile notifications and emails at least once a week, accept correct suggestions and reject wrong ones within 4 days, and keep the hours, phone number and address on your website exactly the same as your listing, because Google may use your website to decide which version is right.
THE MYTH AND THE FACT
Many owners think that once their listing is set up, it stays as they left it. It does not work that way. Google says it may receive suggestions from users to update your Business Profile.2 If a suggested edit needs your review, you may get an email or an in-product notification.2
Search Engine Roundtable reported on September 23, 2026 that Google's help page now spells out the time limit: once notified, you have 4 days to accept or reject the suggestion.1
WHAT HAPPENS IN THE FOUR DAYS
- You accept it: the change goes live, which is what you want when the suggestion is correct.
- You reject it: the wrong information stays off your listing.
- You do nothing: Google says it may automatically publish the update if it is supported by other publicly available information, such as your business website.2
Google also says it may apply suggested user edits without prior review in some cases where edits must meet policy guidelines.2 In the profile editor, text shown in blue is information changed by Google.2 You can always update your Business Profile directly to keep it accurate.2
WHY YOUR WEBSITE DECIDES SO MUCH
Google names your website as an example of the public information it may use to support an edit. That makes your site a tie-breaker. If a stranger suggests your shop closes at 5 and your website's footer still shows old hours that say 5, the wrong suggestion has support.
So the most useful habit is simple: the name, address, phone number and hours on your website must match your listing exactly. Our NAP consistency guide covers cleaning up every directory. This post is about the weekly check that stops new mistakes from landing on Google in the first place.
A FIVE-MINUTE WEEKLY CHECK
- Open your Business Profile and read every notification, including suggested edits and Google updates.
- Look for blue text in the editor and check each changed detail: hours, phone, address, website link and categories.
- Accept or reject each suggestion the same day. Do not wait for the fourth day.
- Check your website footer, contact page and booking page against the listing.
- Before holidays, set special hours on the listing and the website at the same time.
Make sure the email address that gets Google's notices is one someone actually reads. If the listing was set up by a former employee or an old agency, add a current owner first. Posting regular Business Profile updates is a separate job; this check is about the facts, not the posts.
FOR MULTI-LOCATION AND ENTERPRISE BUSINESSES
With many locations, suggested edits arrive across dozens or hundreds of listings, and notices often go to one shared inbox that nobody owns.
- Name an owner for listing notices, with a backup for holidays, so nothing sits past four days.
- Keep one source of truth for every location's hours, phone and address, and publish the website location pages and the listings from it.
- Log every accepted or rejected edit so you can spot patterns, such as one location that keeps getting wrong hours.
- Update the location page first when a branch moves, changes hours or closes, then the listing.
