MYTH: GOOGLE REVIEWS ONLY MATTER FOR YOUR STAR RATING.

Most owners watch one number: the star rating. That still matters. But Google Maps now answers customers' questions with AI, and Google says those answers draw on relevant reviews. So the words customers write about you, what you did, how quickly and for whom, now help decide how your business is described.

AT A GLANCE

By Conqueror Capital · Published

The short answer: the star rating is still important, but the text of your reviews now feeds the AI answers in Google Maps. Ask every customer, right after the job, in a way that invites them to describe what you did. Never write, script, buy or filter reviews.

WHAT CHANGED

AI answers read reviews

Google replaced the old Q&A on Maps with an AI-powered Ask button. According to the Google Product Specialist quoted by Search Engine Roundtable, it gives customers an instant answer based on the business's answers and relevant reviews.1

Google's Ask Maps, announced on March 12, 2026, handles complex, conversational questions and draws on reviews from more than 500 million contributors.2 When a customer asks Maps something specific, the wording of reviews is part of what the answer is built from.

WHY SPECIFIC REVIEWS HELP

a quick comparison

Compare two five-star reviews:

  • "Great service, highly recommend."
  • "They replaced our water heater the same afternoon and explained the options first."

Both are kind. Only the second tells a reader, or an AI answering a question, what you do, how fast, and how you treat people. A customer asking "who replaces water heaters the same day?" is looking for exactly that kind of detail.

WHAT YOU MUST NOT DO

Google's rules

The temptation is to tell customers what to write. Don't. Google's user contributed content policy prohibits fake engagement, which includes reviews that are not based on a real experience and incentives for reviews.3 In practice that means:

  • Do not write reviews for customers, or post reviews for your own business.
  • Do not give customers wording to paste in.
  • Do not offer discounts, gifts or anything else in return for a review.
  • Do not ask only the customers you expect to be happy.

In the US, the FTC also has rules on fake and incentivized reviews. Our post on the FTC review rule warning letters covers them.

HOW TO ASK BETTER

honest and detailed
  • Ask right after the job, while the details are fresh. A short text with your review link works well. Our guide to getting more Google reviews covers timing and links.
  • Ask an open question. "Would you mind sharing what we did for you and how it went?" invites detail without telling anyone what to say.
  • Ask everyone. Make the request part of every finished job, not a favour you ask selected customers.
  • Reply to reviews and name the service. "Thanks for trusting us with your water heater replacement" adds useful context in your own words.
  • Reply to critical reviews calmly. State the facts, offer to fix it, and keep private details out.

WHAT CHANGES FOR MULTI-LOCATION AND ENTERPRISE BUSINESSES

a routine, not a campaign

For brands with many locations, review requests often depend on which manager remembers. That produces uneven review text: some branches are described in detail, others only in stars.

  • Build the ask into the process, for example a review link sent automatically after an invoice is paid, the same way at every location.
  • Train staff on the rules so nobody offers incentives or tells customers what to write.
  • Read review text, not just averages. Note which services are rarely mentioned at each location; those are the gaps customers' questions may hit.
  • Agree reply guidelines so every location answers in the same tone and names the service.

FAQ

short answers

Do the words in Google reviews matter now?

Yes. Google says its AI Ask feature in Maps answers customer questions using the business's answers and relevant reviews, so review text helps describe your business.

Can I tell customers what to write in a review?

No. Give customers your review link and an open question, but never script, write or pay for reviews. Google's policy prohibits fake engagement and incentives for reviews.

When is the best time to ask for a review?

Right after the job is finished, while the customer remembers the details.

Does replying to reviews help?

Replies show customers you care and let you name the service in your own words. Keep replies factual and private details out.

Do star ratings still matter?

Yes. The rating is still one of the first things customers see. Detailed review text adds to it; it does not replace it.
