A WHATSAPP BUTTON ON YOUR GOOGLE LISTING? MAKE SURE SOMEONE ANSWERS IT.
Every contact button on your Google listing (call, WhatsApp or text, website, booking) should lead to a person or a page that responds, and Conqueror Capital recommends checking each one now. Search Engine Roundtable reported on October 7, 2026 that Google is showing a WhatsApp button in some local business panels in Search, in place of the chat button or next to call, directions, website and share. A customer who taps it and hears nothing back is a lost lead, not a missed message.
AT A GLANCE
By Conqueror Capital · Published
The short answer: Search for your business on a phone, tap every button on your listing and see where each one goes. Keep a WhatsApp or text option only if someone checks it during business hours. If nobody will, remove it in your Business Profile under Edit profile, then Contact, and send people to the phone line or booking page you actually staff.
WHAT GOOGLE IS SHOWING
Search Engine Roundtable reported on October 7, 2026 that Google is showing WhatsApp buttons in local panel results in Google Search, either instead of the chat button or alongside the other action buttons, so searchers can message the business over WhatsApp. The publication said it could reproduce the button, which suggests a wider rollout.1
The same report notes that Google began asking businesses for a WhatsApp number some time ago, and a few months before the report it added one by itself for some businesses.1 In July 2025 the publication also reported that Google was asking for an optional text or WhatsApp number when a new Business Profile is set up.2 So a WhatsApp button can appear on a listing whose owner never planned to answer messages there.
HOW CHAT WORKS ON A BUSINESS PROFILE
Google's help page says businesses with a claimed and verified Business Profile can add a WhatsApp or text messaging option to their contact info. The steps: go to your Business Profile, click Edit profile, then Contact, and next to Chat choose WhatsApp or Text message, then add a WhatsApp click-to-chat link or a phone number that can receive texts.3 Google notes that chat options are available only in select regions, and that if you add both, only the text message option is shown to customers.3
This replaced the older built-in chat. Google says that as of July 31, 2024, chat and call history are no longer available in the Business Profile, and that eligible businesses can be contacted through text messages or WhatsApp instead.4 If you stopped thinking about messages when that chat ended, it is worth a fresh look.
EVERY BUTTON, ONE QUESTION: WHO ANSWERS?
- Call. Does the number ring somewhere staffed during the hours on your listing? If calls go to voicemail, is it checked the same day?
- WhatsApp or text. Who receives these messages, on which phone, and who covers for that person on days off?
- Website. Does the link go to a page that matches what the searcher wanted, with your phone number and a booking or quote option easy to find on a phone?
- Booking. Does the booking link still work, and does it show the hours you really keep?
- Directions. Does the pin lead to your door, or, for a service-area business, is your area set correctly?
An unanswered button is worse than no button: the customer has already chosen to contact you, and silence tells them to try someone else.
A SHORT BUTTON CHECK FOR THIS WEEK
- Search your business name on your phone, the way a customer would, and write down every button you see.
- Tap each one. Send a test WhatsApp or text from a personal phone and note how long the reply takes.
- Open your Business Profile, go to Edit profile, then Contact, and check whether a chat number or WhatsApp link is there that you did not add.
- Decide which channels you will staff. Keep those, remove the rest, and set an away message in whichever app receives the messages if it offers one.
- Put the same phone number, hours and booking link on your website, so the listing and the site agree.
FOR MULTI-LOCATION AND ENTERPRISE BUSINESSES
With many locations, the risk multiplies: one branch adds a manager's personal WhatsApp, another keeps an old text number, and nobody owns the replies. Google's help page notes that different Business Profiles can use the same WhatsApp link,3 so a business can route every location to one central team if that suits it more than local replies. Either way, keep a list of every location's chat setting, who answers it and in which hours, and review it each quarter alongside hours and phone numbers. Our guide to Google Business Profiles for multiple locations covers the rest of that audit.
FAQ
Why is there a WhatsApp button on my Google listing?
Google is showing WhatsApp buttons in some local business panels, Search Engine Roundtable reported in October 2026. Google has asked businesses for WhatsApp numbers during setup and, the same report says, added one by itself for some businesses.
How do I add or remove WhatsApp on my Google Business Profile?
Go to your Business Profile, click Edit profile, then Contact. Next to Chat, choose Edit, then select WhatsApp or Text message and add or clear the link or number, then save.
What happens if I add both WhatsApp and text messaging?
Google's help page says that if you add both options, only the text message option is shown to customers.
Is the old Google Business Profile chat still available?
No. Google says chat and call history stopped being available in the Business Profile on July 31, 2024. Eligible businesses can now be reached by text message or WhatsApp instead.
Should every business turn on WhatsApp on Google?
Only if someone will answer it during business hours. A message button nobody checks loses the customer; point people to a staffed phone line or booking page instead.
