Local Services Ads Are Hiding the Phone Number

Some Google Local Services Ads now show a "Get phone number" button and reveal the number only when a searcher hovers over the ad, and Conqueror Capital's advice is to test your own ad the way a stranger would, on a computer and on a phone, this week. Search Engine Roundtable reported the behaviour on October 2, 2026.

AT A GLANCE

By Conqueror Capital · Published

The short answer: The number has not gone away; on desktop it appears when the mouse moves over the ad. What we do not know yet is how every device and every ad shows it, so check yours. Then make sure the other way in, message leads, is answered as quickly as calls, because a searcher who does not see a number may send a message instead.

WHAT WAS SPOTTED

october 2026

Search Engine Roundtable wrote that Local Services Ads seem to hide the phone number until you hover your mouse over the ad, with a large button that says "Get phone number". It also noted the button is not really needed, because the number shows as soon as the mouse moves near the ad.1 The author was not sure whether the change was new.1

It is not the first time. The same site reported Local Services Ads showing the phone number on hover in July 2024.2 So this looks like a display Google tests and changes, not a fixed rule. Treat it as something to check, not something to panic about.

WHY A HIDDEN NUMBER MATTERS

calls are the point

For plumbers, electricians, locksmiths, cleaners and other service businesses, a Local Services Ad is often there to make the phone ring. Anything between the searcher and the number is one more moment where they can scroll to the next provider. The report describes what happens with a mouse on a computer. It does not say how the same ad looks on a phone, where there is no hover, so do not assume either way: look.

The practical risk is not the button itself. It is a business that never looks at its own ad, and finds out about a change from a quieter month.

HOW TO TEST YOUR OWN AD

ten minutes
  1. Search like a customer. Use the service and your town, for example "emergency plumber" plus your city, on a computer and on a phone that is not signed in to your business account.
  2. Note what shows first. Is the number visible, behind a button, or only on hover? Write down the date and the device.
  3. Ask two or three people outside the business to find your ad and call you from it on their own phones. Ask what they had to tap.
  4. Check the call reaches a person. A call that rings out costs you the job. Our page on missed calls and charged leads explains how those calls are handled.
  5. Repeat monthly, and after any change to your service areas or hours.

MAKE MESSAGE LEADS COUNT

the other door

Local Services Ads also produce message leads. Google says it routes messages through anonymized proxy numbers and email aliases, and that you can get new lead notifications by email, text message (US only) or both.3 Google also notes that message leads are typically priced lower than the matching phone lead, though not always.3

If fewer searchers see your number straight away, more of them may write instead. Turn on notifications for whoever answers, agree a reply time during business hours, and reply from the lead inbox rather than letting messages wait for the end of the day.

FOR MULTI-LOCATION AND ENTERPRISE TEAMS

same test, every area

A mid-size business or a franchise group may run Local Services Ads across several service areas, with calls routed to different offices or a central team. One person checking one city is not enough. Give each area an owner, run the same test in each one on the same day, and log what the ad showed and where the call or message went. Agree one rule for message replies across every office, and review the lead inbox together each month so a change in how ads display shows up as a pattern, not as one office's complaint. If you also run search campaigns, our Google Ads service covers how we keep those checks on a schedule.

FAQ

short answers

Do Local Services Ads still show the phone number?

Yes. Search Engine Roundtable reported on October 2, 2026 that some ads show a "Get phone number" button and reveal the number when the mouse hovers over the ad.

Is the hidden phone number in Local Services Ads new?

Not entirely. The same site reported Local Services Ads showing the number on hover in July 2024, so it appears to be a display Google tests and changes.

How do I check how my Local Services Ad looks?

Search for your service and town on a computer and on a phone that is not signed in to your business account, note what shows first, and ask a few people outside the business to call you from the ad.

What are message leads in Local Services Ads?

Messages customers send through your ad. Google routes them through anonymized proxy numbers and email aliases, and you can be notified by email, text message in the US, or both.
