YOUTUBE WANTS ORIGINAL SHORTS. YOUR REAL WORK IS ORIGINAL.

In early October 2026, YouTube said Shorts made mainly from reused clips, with only a voice-over or small technical or template edits, will likely be recommended less in the Shorts feed. It wants creators to bring their own voice, storytelling or point of view. A local business already has what no template has: its own work.

AT A GLANCE

By Conqueror Capital · Published

The short answer: YouTube is recommending fewer Shorts that mostly reuse other people's clips or only add minor edits. It is a change to recommendations, not to monetization rules. For a local business, the safe and simple move is to film your own work: a finished job, a common customer question answered in your own words, and a mistake you often see and how to avoid it.

WHAT YOUTUBE SAID

early October 2026

YouTube announced the change at the start of October 2026, and it was reported by Vanguard and Panstag. According to those reports, channels that mainly aggregate or re-upload other creators' videos without significant changes will likely see less distribution in the Shorts feed, and the same applies to content with only minor technical edits or template-based changes.12

YouTube said creators can still use clips if they add meaningful original elements, such as commentary, their own edits or storytelling, and encouraged creators to focus on their own voice and point of view.1

This is about how Shorts are recommended. YouTube's separate monetization policy on reused content already applied to channels in its Partner Program.3

WHAT IT MEANS FOR A LOCAL BUSINESS

good news
  • Template videos are a weaker bet. Stock clips with a voice-over, or the same template with new words each week, are the kind of Shorts YouTube says it will recommend less.
  • Real work is original by default. A plumber fixing a leak, a salon finishing a colour, a café setting up for the morning: nobody else has that footage.
  • Your phone is enough. Shorts are vertical and short. Good light, a steady hand and clear sound matter more than editing.

THREE SHORTS TO FILM THIS WEEK

no template needed
  1. One finished job. Show the before and after, and say in one sentence what you did and where. Only film customers or their property with their permission.
  2. The question customers ask most. Answer it on camera in your own words, the way you would on the phone. Keep it under a minute.
  3. One mistake you see often. Explain what goes wrong and how to avoid it. This shows you know your trade without selling.

Say the area you work in, add a clear title, and reuse the same videos on your Google Business Profile and website. Use music that is licensed for the platform, such as YouTube's own audio library.

FOR MULTI-LOCATION AND LARGER BRANDS

keep it real at scale
  • Film at each location. Short clips from real teams at real sites beat one central template recut for every branch.
  • Give teams a simple brief. A list of question topics and filming tips lets staff record useful Shorts without an agency at every shoot.
  • Get consent in writing. Keep signed permission for every employee and customer who appears on camera.
  • Watch the pattern, not one video. Compare views on original clips with templated ones over several weeks before changing your plan.
