WHY IS MY GOOGLE BUSINESS PROFILE NOT SHOWING MY PHONE NUMBER?
The most common reason is a setting: Google lets owners hide the number, and the "Don't show" switch sits in Advanced settings where it is easy to turn on by mistake. If that switch is off, the number is usually stuck in review, was not approved, or was changed back by Google or by a listing tool that also edits your profile. Check them in that order.
FIRST: WHAT EXACTLY IS MISSING?
Search your business name on Google and on Google Maps, on a phone where you are not signed in to the account that manages the profile. Then compare with what you see when you open the profile as the owner.
- Number shows for you but not for customers: it is probably hidden, or your edit has not gone live yet. Start with reasons 1 and 2.
- A different number shows: someone or something changed it. Go to reasons 3 and 4.
- Google keeps removing the number you enter: the number itself is the problem. Go to reason 5.
THE 5 REASONS, IN ORDER
1. The number is set to "Don't show"
Google's help pages say you can hide your phone number on your Business Profile.1 The path is: open your Business Profile, select More, then Business Profile settings, then Advanced settings. Under "Phone number", check whether Don't show is turned on.2 Turn it off if you want customers to call you. This is the first thing we check, because it takes seconds and a former employee or agency may have switched it on.
2. Your edit is pending or was not approved
Google reviews changes before they go live. It says edits usually take up to 10 minutes to review, but sometimes up to 30 days.3 An edit can also come back "Not approved" when Google can't confirm the information is accurate, and Google says you may be able to appeal a rejected edit.3 Open Edit profile and look at the status next to the phone number before you type it again. Re-entering the same number over and over while one edit is still pending only makes it harder to see what happened.
3. Google updated the number
Google says that when it gets reports that your information isn't accurate, it might update your profile, and you'll get a notification and an alert in the "Edit profile" section.3 Google says it gathers this information from a range of sources. If your number changed and you didn't change it, look for that alert, then correct the number from the owner account.
A good defence is consistency. Put the same number in your website header or footer, on your contact page and in your listings on other sites. When your own website shows an old number, that old number can keep coming back. Our guide to business listings and citations explains how to keep them matched.
4. Another tool is overwriting it
Listing-sync services, booking tools and other platforms you connected to your profile can push their own data to it. If the number flips back after you fix it, check who has access: in Business Profile settings, open People and access, and remove managers or services you no longer use.6 Fix the number inside that tool too, or it will send the old one again.
5. The number breaks Google's rules
Google's guidelines for representing your business say:4
- the phone number must be under the direct control of the business,
- use a local number instead of a central call-center helpline whenever possible,
- don't provide numbers that redirect or refer people to numbers other than those of the actual business,
- premium-rate numbers are not acceptable.
Google also says fax numbers can't be added.1 A number that breaks these rules may be removed. Call-tracking numbers need care here; read how to track phone calls from Google before you put one on your profile.
QUICK FIX TABLE
| What you see | Most likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No number at all for customers | "Don't show" is on | Advanced settings, turn it off [2] |
| New number not live yet | Edit pending | Wait; review can take up to 30 days [3] |
| Edit marked "Not approved" | Google couldn't confirm it | Match the number on your website, then appeal [3] |
| Number changed without you | Google update or a connected tool | Check the alert in Edit profile and remove old tools [3] |
| Number keeps being removed | Breaks a guideline | Use a local number you control [4] |
Your Google Ads location assets can show a different number from the one on your profile.5 If you are looking at an ad, you may be seeing the ad's number, not the profile's.
QUESTIONS OWNERS ASK
Can I add more than one phone number?
Yes. Google says you can add up to 2 more numbers on top of your primary number, either mobile or landline.1
Can I use my cell phone number?
Google accepts mobile numbers.1 Keep in mind that the number will be public. Many owners use a separate business line so their personal phone stays private.
Do I need the country code or dashes?
No. Pick your country from the menu and type the number. Google formats it for you.1 This works the same for US and Canadian numbers.
My number is missing and my whole profile is gone too. Is that the same problem?
No. That is a listing problem: verification, a suspension or a duplicate. Read why your business is not showing on Google Maps, and if Google has suspended you, how to appeal a suspended profile.
Can you fix this for me?
Yes. We can go through your profile settings, edit history and connected tools with you, find the cause and fix it. Google still decides what is shown and when.
