GOOGLE BUSINESS PROFILE SUSPENDED?
A suspended profile can drop you off Google Maps overnight. Don't panic, and don't make a new profile. Fix what broke the rules, then appeal with evidence that matches. Google's own help pages are linked below.
WHAT CHANGED RECENTLY
- Google now shows why a review reply was rejected — Rejected replies come back with a reason and an edit option.
- Google may now act on spam reports — Reports can feed manual actions against competitors who cheat.
This guide covers what stays true. The blog tracks the changes as they land.
FIND THE CAUSE
Google says it may suspend profiles that break its guidelines.1 Before appealing, compare your profile with the guidelines line by line.2 Common things to check:
- Name. It should be your real-world business name, without taglines, phone numbers or extra keywords.2
- Address. P.O. boxes and remote mailboxes aren't acceptable, and virtual offices only qualify if staffed during business hours.2
- Duplicates. Google says there should be only one profile per business.2
- Service area. Businesses that travel to customers should set a service area, not a virtual address.2
- Categories. Use the fewest categories that describe what the business is.2
HOW TO APPEAL
| Step | Detail |
|---|---|
| 1. Fix the problem | Edit anything that breaks the guidelines before you appeal |
| 2. Open the appeals tool | Sign in with the Google Account that manages the profile, select the profile and the decision, then submit [1][3] |
| 3. Add evidence | Google lists documents such as business registration, a business licence, tax certificates and utility bills; the name and address must match the profile [1] |
| 4. Beat the clock | Once you open the evidence form, Google says you must submit it within 60 minutes or it won't be attached [1] |
| 5. Wait and track | Check the status in the appeals tool; don't send repeat appeals for the same issue [1][3] |
If your Google Account itself is restricted, Google says to appeal the account first, then the profile.3
DON'T DO THIS
After reinstatement, keep the profile within the rules with our guide to optimizing a Google Business Profile. Listing back but still hard to find? See why a business is not showing on Google Maps. Duplicate profiles are a common issue for chains; see Business Profiles for multiple locations.
SUSPENDED PROFILE OR RESTRICTED ACCOUNT?
Google uses similar words for two different problems, and the order you fix them in matters.
- A profile suspension affects one Business Profile. Owners and managers can't act on that profile, but the Google Account still works.1
- An account restriction is wider. Google says the Business Profiles you manage are suspended and you won't be able to create or claim other profiles.1
- A content restriction is narrower still: Google can reject a single photo, description or review reply without touching the rest of the profile.3
If the account is restricted, appeal the account first, then the profile.1 Appealing the profile while the account is still restricted spends an attempt on the wrong problem. Check which of the three you actually have before writing anything.
EVIDENCE: GET IT READY FIRST
Once you open the evidence form, Google says you must submit it within 60 minutes or it won't be attached to your appeal.1 That is not enough time to go hunting for paperwork, so collect it first.
Google lists supporting documents including official business registration, a business licence, tax certificates, and a utility bill such as electricity, phone, water or internet.1 The requirement that catches people out is the matching rule: Google says the business name and address must match the profile you are appealing.1
- A licence in an old trading name doesn't match a renamed profile. Update the licence or the profile first.
- A utility bill at the owner's home doesn't match a storefront address on the profile.
- Service-area businesses have no public address to evidence. Google says to set a service area rather than list a virtual address2 — fix that before appealing, or the documents will never line up.
Scan each document, confirm it is readable, put them in one folder, then start the form.
FAQ
How long does an appeal take?
Google's appeal page gives a review time, which it may change. Check the current figure on the page.3
My appeal was denied. Now what?
Google describes further review options for denied requests.1 Re-check the guidelines first; a second appeal with the same problem will likely get the same answer.
Can you get my profile back?
We can review your profile against the guidelines and help prepare the appeal. We can't guarantee the outcome.
