WHY DID MY GOOGLE REVIEWS DISAPPEAR?

Most of the time, Google reviews disappear because Google removed them for breaking its content policies, such as spam, fake engagement or a conflict of interest, and Google says reviews removed for policy violations won't be restored. Other causes include a reviewer deleting their own review, a new review still being checked, a recent profile merge, or a suspension and reinstatement.

WHY IT HURTS A LOCAL BUSINESS

the local angle

Your reviews sit on your Business Profile in Google Search and Maps. That's the place a nearby customer compares you with the two or three other businesses in the same results, often in a few seconds, on a phone. A lower count or a changed star rating is one of the first things they see.

Reviews also feed how Google judges a business. Google's own ranking tips say prominence is partly based on how many reviews a business has, and that "more reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking."5 So a sudden drop is worth understanding, not just shrugging off. It's also worth staying calm: in most cases the reason can be worked out from the timing.

THE COMMON CAUSES

cause · what it looks like · can it come back
CauseWhat it usually looks likeCan it come back?
Policy removal (spam, off-topic, profanity, fake engagement)One or several reviews vanish with no notice. Google says this is the usual reason reviews go missing [1][2]No. Google says reviews removed for policy violations won't be restored [1]
Incentive or conflict of interestReviews from staff, family, or customers who were offered a discount or freebie disappear [2]No. Stop the practice that caused it
Unusual volume or patternA burst of reviews arrives in a short window, then some disappear. Google's policy removes content showing "unusual volumes or patterns" that look like rating manipulation [2]Usually not. Ask steadily over time instead
Still being checkedA customer says they posted, but you can't see it yet. Google says checks can take a few days [1]Yes, if it passes the check
Reviewer deleted itOne review disappears, for example after a dispute was settled or a customer changed their mind. Reviewers can edit or delete their own reviews [3]Only if the customer posts again
Profiles were mergedCounts look wrong right after a duplicate profile was merged. Google says reviews from both profiles may take a few days to display [1]Usually, after a few days
Suspension, then reinstatementReviews are missing after the profile comes back. Google says this can happen and to contact support [1]Ask Google support
Reviews limited for the profile or categoryGoogle says it may temporarily turn off user content for certain profiles or business categories, and it has removed reviews for some school categories [1]Depends on Google's decision and your category
Reported and removedSomeone flagged the review and Google found a policy problem [4]No

WHAT TO DO, STEP BY STEP

in this order
  1. Confirm what is actually missing. Write down your review count and rating from Search and from Maps, and note which reviews you can no longer find. A screenshot of your reviews every month makes this easy next time.
  2. Match the timing to recent events. Did you merge a duplicate profile, get suspended and reinstated, change your business name or category, or run a review push in the weeks before? The answer usually points to one row in the table above.
  3. Check your own review requests against the policy. Google doesn't allow incentives such as payment, discounts or free goods in exchange for a review, and it doesn't allow businesses to discourage negative reviews or ask only happy customers.2 If your process does either, change it now. Asking genuine customers for an honest review, with no reward attached, is allowed.2
  4. Stop asking people with a conflict of interest. Reviews from current or former staff, relatives or business partners count as a conflict of interest under Google's policy.2 Don't ask them to post, or post again.
  5. If reviews went missing after a reinstatement, contact Google Business Profile support, as Google's help page suggests.1 Have the profile name, address and the date of reinstatement ready.
  6. Give pending reviews a few days. If a customer just posted and you can't see it, Google says checks can take a few days.1 If the customer is on an old phone or app, Google suggests updating Google Maps.1
  7. Rebuild with real reviews, at a steady pace. Ask every satisfied customer the same way, at the same point in your process, rather than in a one-week push. Our guide to getting more Google reviews covers the ask, and the free review link generator makes a direct link you can text or print.

WHAT YOU CAN'T DO

save the time
  • You can't restore a review Google removed for a policy reason. Google says those won't be restored.1
  • You can't delete someone else's review. You can report it, and Google removes it only if it breaks a policy.34
  • Google won't settle a dispute. Its help page says Google doesn't get involved in conflicts between businesses and customers.4 If a fair negative review stays up, reporting it again won't help; a calm public reply is the more useful step. See how to respond to negative Google reviews.
  • Don't replace lost reviews with bought or swapped ones. That is fake engagement under Google's policy, the same reason reviews disappear in the first place.2

QUESTIONS OWNERS ASK

short answers

Why are my Google reviews pending or not showing up?

New reviews are checked against Google's policies first, and Google says that can take a few days.1 If a review never appears, it was most likely filtered for a policy reason.

Why is my Google review count going down?

A falling count usually means reviews were removed by Google's checks, deleted by the people who wrote them, or are still settling after a profile merge.13 Use the table above and match it to the timing.

Will Google tell me why a review was removed?

Not for reviews filtered automatically. For a review you reported yourself, the Reviews Management Tool shows the status of your report, and you can submit a one-time appeal if a reported review stays up.4

Do missing reviews mean my profile is in trouble?

Not on their own. If the profile itself has disappeared from Maps, that's a different problem. See why a business is not showing on Google Maps and what to do when a profile is suspended.

Can you get my reviews back?

No one can bring back reviews Google removed for a policy reason. We can look at your profile and your review process with you, find the likely cause, and set up a steady, policy-safe way to ask customers for reviews. The results depend on your customers and on Google.
