CAN I HAVE A GOOGLE BUSINESS PROFILE WITHOUT AN ADDRESS?
Yes — if you run a service-area business, Google lets you hide your street address from the public while still ranking on Maps. You still give Google a real address privately; it just never shows on your listing. Businesses with a storefront customers walk into don't get this option.
WHAT GOOGLE ACTUALLY REQUIRES
Google's own guidelines are direct about this: "Use a precise, accurate address and/or service area to describe your business location," and separately, "If you're a service-area business, you should hide your business address from customers. For example, if you're a plumber and run your business from your residential address, clear the address from your Business Profile."1
So the address isn't optional information Google never sees — it's information Google sees but doesn't publish. That distinction matters because "no address" and "hidden address" are different settings, and only one of them is allowed.
WHO QUALIFIES AS SERVICE-AREA
Google defines it by where the work happens, not where you keep paperwork: "Service-area businesses, or businesses that serve customers at their locations, should have one profile for the central office or location with a designated service area," and "if your business doesn't have a storefront with clear signage but travels to customers at their physical locations, you're allowed one service-area Business Profile."1
That covers most of the trades we build sites for — plumbers, electricians, HVAC techs, landscapers, mobile detailers, handymen, home-based consultants. If a customer never has a reason to visit your door, you're a candidate for a hidden address and a drawn service area instead.
Who still has to show an address
A retail storefront, clinic, restaurant, or any business with signage customers walk up to does not get to hide its address — Google's ranking and verification system expects that address to be visible and accurate, because the listing is representing a real place people go.
HOW TO HIDE IT, STEP BY STEP
- Sign into your Business Profile manager and open Business information.
- Under Location, confirm your category is accurate — this is what determines whether the service-area option is even offered.
- Select "I deliver goods and services to my customers" and clear the "Also display your address" option, or set your profile to service-area only.
- Draw your service area by city, postcode, or radius. Google weights relevance heavily by this area, so don't claim a territory you can't realistically serve.
- Keep your real address saved privately in the profile — Google still uses it for verification and eligibility even though it's never shown publicly.
The exact menu wording shifts between Google's web dashboard and the Business Profile app. If you can't find the toggle, that's usually a category or profile-type mismatch — see setting up a Business Profile for eligibility basics.
A SEPARATE RULE: TWO BUSINESSES, ONE ADDRESS
This is a different question from hiding an address, but it comes up in the same conversation: two genuinely separate businesses can share a physical address — a shared office suite, a coworking space, a hotel restaurant — but Google requires each to run its own profile, not one shared listing. Google's guidance on co-located businesses gives examples like "restaurants inside hotels and pharmacies inside supermarkets" and says to "create two profiles instead... use a different name for the second business."1 Faking a second location just to rank in more neighborhoods is a different problem and the fastest way to get suspended — see why profiles get suspended.
QUESTIONS OWNERS ASK
Will hiding my address hurt my ranking?
Not by itself. Local ranking for a service-area business is driven by the service area you draw, your category, reviews, and proximity signals Google still calculates from your private address — not by whether the address is visible on the page.
Can I use a P.O. box instead of my real address?
No. Google's guidelines rule out P.O. boxes and remote mailboxes as the address on file, hidden or not — it has to be a precise, real location.1
What if I work from home and don't want Google mail arriving there?
Postcard verification, if offered, goes to the address on file regardless of whether it's publicly hidden. See verifying without video for the other verification options.
Can I switch from a visible address to hidden later?
Yes, by changing the profile to service-area and clearing the display setting. Your reviews, posts and history carry over — you're changing a display setting, not creating a new listing.
Can you set this up for us?
Yes. We check your category, draw a service area that matches where you actually work, and make sure the address is only hidden where Google's rules allow it.
