WHAT IS A SERVICE-AREA BUSINESS ON GOOGLE?

A service-area business (often shortened to SAB) is Google's category for a business that travels to customers rather than having customers walk into a storefront — a plumber, mobile detailer, or home-based consultant, for example. It gets one Business Profile with a drawn service area instead of a public street address.

GOOGLE'S OWN DEFINITION

the exact wording

Google Business Profile Help defines it plainly: "Service-area businesses, or businesses that serve customers at their locations, should have one profile for the central office or location with a designated service area," and "if your business doesn't have a storefront with clear signage but travels to customers at their physical locations, you're allowed one service-area Business Profile."1

Two words matter in that definition: "travels to." The category isn't about where you're incorporated, where your office is, or whether you work from home — it's about whether the customer's physical location is where the work happens.

THE QUALIFYING TEST

three questions, not one

Run your business through these in order:

  1. Does a customer ever need to walk into your location to get served? If yes — a retail shop, a clinic, a restaurant — you are not a service-area business, even if you also drive to some jobs.
  2. Is there signage at your address meant for customers to find? A sign, a storefront, a waiting room — any of these means Google expects your address to be public.
  3. If neither applies, do you go to the customer for most or all jobs? That's the service-area pattern.

Examples by trade

Typically service-area: plumbers, electricians, HVAC techs, landscapers, mobile detailers, pest control, locksmiths, home-based consultants, mobile pet groomers, junk removal, handymen.

Typically not: retail stores, restaurants, clinics and med spas with a waiting room, salons, gyms, and any business with a sign customers are meant to drive to.

Some trades split down the middle — a contractor who also runs a small showroom, for instance — and the test above is what decides it, not the trade name.

WHAT THE CATEGORY ACTUALLY CHANGES

on your live listing

Choosing service-area in your profile settings does three things: it lets you hide your street address from public view, it replaces that address with a drawn service area (by city, postcode, or radius) that Google uses to judge relevance, and it still requires a real, precise address on file privately for verification — a P.O. box does not qualify, hidden or not.1

We cover the actual hide-the-address steps separately: see Google Business Profile without an address for the walkthrough. This page is about whether you qualify for that setting in the first place.

Misclassifying either direction causes problems

Claiming service-area status to hide a storefront address, or claiming a storefront to rank in more neighborhoods than you actually serve, are both the kind of guideline violation that leads to a profile getting flagged — see why profiles get suspended.

QUESTIONS OWNERS ASK

short answers

What does "service area" mean inside a Google Business Profile, specifically?

It's a setting, found under Business Information, that replaces a visible address with a list of cities, postcodes, or a radius you serve — used for ranking and relevance instead of proximity to a visible storefront.

What is the difference between a service-area business and a field service business?

They're the same idea described two ways — "field service" is the general industry term for work performed at the customer's location; "service-area business" is Google's specific profile category for that pattern.

Can a service-area business still have an office?

Yes. You can run an office, workshop, or warehouse that customers never visit — it stays private on the profile, and the service area is what's shown publicly.

How big should the service area be?

As big as you can actually and reliably serve, and no bigger. Google weights relevance by the area you claim, so an unrealistically wide radius tends to dilute ranking rather than extend it.

Can you set this up for us?

Yes. We check your category against the test above, draw a service area that matches where your trucks actually go, and verify the rest of the profile is consistent with it.
