LOCAL SEO VS GOOGLE ADS: WHICH ONE FIRST?

Should a local business put its money into local SEO or Google Ads? They are separate systems that Google keeps apart on purpose. Here is how each one works, what it costs you, and how to decide which to start with.

WHAT CHANGED RECENTLY

from our blog

This guide covers what stays true. The blog tracks the changes as they land.

TWO SEPARATE SYSTEMS

per Google

Google says it never accepts money to include or rank sites in its search results, that it costs nothing to appear in organic results, and that advertising with Google won't have any effect on your site's presence in those results.1 For the map results, Google says there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking; local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence.2

Ads work on a different basis. Ad Rank decides whether your ad is eligible to show and where, using your bid, the quality of your ads and landing page, the competitiveness of the auction, the context of the search and other factors.3 So buying ads doesn't lift your free listings, and good local SEO doesn't lower your ad costs by itself.

HOW TO DECIDE

five questions
  1. Is your Business Profile eligible and verified? If not, fix that first. It costs nothing to appear, and it feeds both approaches. See Business Profile setup.
  2. Do you need calls this month? Local SEO has no set timeline. If cash flow depends on new jobs soon, a small, tightly targeted ads test can fill the gap while SEO builds.
  3. Can you measure calls and forms? Without tracking you can't judge ads. Set it up first: track phone calls from Google.
  4. What is a customer worth? Your job value and close rate set what you can afford per lead. See Google Ads budget.
  5. How far are you from the searcher? Distance is part of local ranking.2 Ads let you choose the areas you target, so they can reach towns where your profile doesn't show yet.

RUNNING BOTH

without wasting money
  • Share one landing page standard. Ad Rank looks at landing page quality,3 and the same clear service page helps organic visitors.
  • Use ads data to guide content. The search terms that turn into booked jobs are good topics for your service pages.
  • Watch free performance in Search Console. See Search Console for local business.
  • Review before scaling. Judge each channel by booked jobs, not clicks or impressions.

FAQ

common questions

Will running Google Ads help my Google Maps ranking?

No. Google says advertising has no effect on your presence in its search results,1 and there's no way to pay for a better local ranking.2

Is local SEO free?

Appearing costs nothing,1 but the work does: your time or an agency's, plus a good website and real reviews.

Which gets results faster?

Ads can show once approved; organic results have no set timeline. Neither can promise calls, and we don't promise rankings or returns.
