GOOGLE ADS FOR LOCAL BUSINESS.
Most wasted local ad spend comes from settings, not ads: the wrong location option, no negative keywords, no conversion tracking. This guide walks through each setting with Google's own help pages linked.
WHAT CHANGED RECENTLY
- Call-only ads stop in February 2027 — Google is moving advertisers to call assets on search ads.
- Local Services Ads are moving into Google Ads — Campaign management moves under the Google Ads interface.
This guide covers what stays true. The blog tracks the changes as they land.
WHERE ADS SHOW
Google Ads can target countries, areas within a country, a radius around a location, or location groups such as your business locations.1 You also choose who counts as being in that area:2
- Presence or interest: people in, regularly in, or who have shown interest in your locations. Google calls this broad geo targeting.
- Presence: people in or regularly in your locations. Google suggests considering it when you only want to reach people in specific locations, or when your business is in a sensitive vertical with strict targeting limits.
A plumber who only serves one metro area usually doesn't want clicks from people elsewhere who are merely researching that city, so check this setting on every campaign. Google notes location is estimated from signals like IP address and device location, so it is never exact.2
Radius or named areas? A radius is quick to set around your address. Cities or postal codes follow the boundaries you actually serve and make it easier to exclude areas you don't.
THE SETTINGS
| Setting | What it does | Watch out |
|---|---|---|
| Location assets | Show your address, a map or distance with your ads; for locations you own, the data source can be your Google Business Profile [3] | Link the right Business Profile account; only one location asset type per account [3] |
| Call assets | Add a phone number so people can tap to call from the ad [4] | Google says putting a phone number in the ad text instead may lead to disapproval [4] |
| Ad schedule | Pick the days and hours ads can show, or adjust bids by time [5] | Schedules use your account's time zone; campaigns still pace toward a monthly spend based on the daily budget [5][6] |
| Negative keywords | Stop ads showing for searches you don't want, such as "jobs" or "DIY" [7] | Negative match types behave differently from normal keywords; review search terms regularly [7] |
| Conversion tracking | Record the actions you value, like a form fill, purchase or phone call [8] | Without it you can't see which keywords or ads produce leads, and Smart Bidding has nothing to optimize toward [8] |

RESTRICTED CATEGORIES
If you advertise housing, jobs or consumer finance (for example a mortgage broker, a landlord or a business hiring staff), Google's personalized advertising policy limits targeting in the United States and Canada:9
- No targeting by gender, age, parental status or marital status.
- No ZIP code targeting. Radius, city and country targeting are allowed, with a radius of at least 1 km.
- In Canada, the first 3 characters of a postal code (the FSA) are acceptable.
Ads that break these rules can be restricted until the targeting is fixed.9 This is a summary of Google's policy, not legal advice.
FAQ
Should a local business use "Presence" or "Presence or interest"?
It depends on who you serve. If customers must be in your area, Presence avoids paying for people who are only interested in it. Google describes when each option fits.2
Can my Google Business Profile show in my ads?
Yes, through location assets linked to your Business Profile.3
How much should I spend?
There is no honest single number. Costs depend on your trade, area and competition. Set a budget you can afford to test, track conversions, and judge it on leads.
Can you guarantee a top position or a return?
No. Google runs the auction and ranks ads. Nobody can promise a position, a click volume or a return on ad spend.
