HOW TO SET A GOOGLE ADS BUDGET FOR A LOCAL BUSINESS.

How much should a local business spend on Google Ads? Nobody honest can give one number for every trade and town. Here is how Google's budget actually works, how bidding choices change it, and how to size a first test from your own data.

WHAT CHANGED RECENTLY

from our blog

This guide covers what stays true. The blog tracks the changes as they land.

HOW THE BUDGET WORKS

per Google Ads Help

You set an average daily budget for each campaign, the average amount you'd be comfortable spending per day.1 Two rules matter:

  • Daily can run higher. On a given day, a campaign might spend up to twice its average daily budget to take advantage of traffic swings.2
  • Monthly is capped. Google says you won't be charged more than 30.4 times your average daily budget in a month, 30.4 being the average number of days in a month.12

So to plan a month, decide the monthly amount you can afford and divide by 30.4. You can also use a shared budget across several campaigns.1

BIDDING CHOICES

how they use your budget
StrategyGoogle's descriptionWhen a local business might use it
Maximize clicksGets as many clicks as possible within your budget [3]Early, before calls and forms are tracked; watch search terms closely
Maximize conversionsAims for the most conversions while spending your budget [3]Once calls, forms and bookings are tracked
Target CPAAims for conversions at a target cost per action [3]When you know what a lead is worth to you and have conversion history
Target ROASAims for conversion value at a target return on ad spend [3]Mostly when sales have values, such as online orders
Manual CPCYou set maximum cost-per-click bids yourself [3]Tight control over a small set of keywords

For conversion-based strategies, Google says to make sure conversion tracking is set up correctly and the actions you want are set as Primary.3 Conversions can include phone calls, sign-ups and purchases.4

SIZE A FIRST TEST

from your own numbers
  1. Work out what a customer is worth. Your average job value and how many enquiries become jobs. Only you have these numbers.
  2. Look up real costs for your area. Keyword Planner shows search volume estimates, average costs for keywords, and forecasts of clicks and conversions based on spend.5 Google notes that bid, budget, ad quality, location targeting and other factors all affect results.5
  3. Set tracking first. Calls and forms, as in our GA4 setup guide. Without it you can't tell what the budget bought.
  4. Target tightly. Only the areas you serve, per our Google Ads for local business guide.
  5. Start small and check often. Google's own advice is to start small and check your account daily after a new budget.1
  6. Decide in advance when to stop or scale. For example: if spend reaches a set multiple of what a lead is worth to you with no booked calls, pause and review search terms and the landing page rather than raising the budget.

FAQ

common questions

What's the minimum Google Ads budget?

The right starting budget depends on your costs per click and what a lead is worth. Check Keyword Planner for your own keywords and area.5

Why did Google spend more than my daily budget?

Google allows up to twice the average daily budget on a given day, while keeping the monthly total within 30.4 times the daily budget.2

Should I follow Google's budget recommendations?

Google bases them on recent campaign performance.1 Treat them as a suggestion and judge against booked jobs, not clicks.

Is Local Services Ads cheaper?

It works differently, charging per lead. See Google Local Services Ads.

Can you run my ads?

Yes. We build and manage Google & Meta ads, with the account in your name. We don't promise positions or returns.
