SEARCH CAMPAIGNS

12 questions
What is a Google Search campaign, in plain terms?

A Search campaign shows a text ad in Google results when someone types what you sell, such as "water heater repair" or "brunch near me". You choose the keywords, the locations, the schedule and the budget, and Google runs an auction each time a search happens. You pay when someone clicks. It is the campaign type we build first for most local businesses because it reaches people who are already looking. See Google Ads for local business.

What decides whether my ad shows, and in which position?

Google calls it Ad Rank. It uses your bid, the quality of your ads and landing page, how competitive the auction is, the context of the search and other factors. That is why a bigger bid alone does not win, and why the page the ad sends people to matters as much as the ad. More in local SEO vs Google Ads.

Can I pay enough to hold the top spot every time?

No. Google runs the auction and ranks ads on every search, so nobody can promise a position, a click volume or a return on ad spend. Anyone who guarantees the top spot is guessing or selling something else. What we can do is build the campaign properly, track what it produces and report it honestly. See Google and Meta ads.

How quickly can Search ads start showing?

As soon as the ads are approved and eligible, which is one of the main differences from local SEO, where there is no set timeline. Showing is not the same as producing calls, though. We set up conversion tracking before spending so the first weeks tell you something useful. The comparison is in local SEO vs Google Ads.

What happens to my ads the day I stop paying?

They stop showing. That is true of Google Ads and Local Services Ads alike. Your Business Profile and website keep working, and local SEO work compounds instead of switching off, which is why we see ads as a way to fill the calendar now while the free channels build. See local SEO vs Google Ads.

Can I still run a call-only ad?

No. Google removed the option to create new call-only ads in February 2026, and existing ones stop receiving impressions in February 2027. The replacement is a call asset on a responsive search ad, which shows a call button on phones. If your account still has call-only ads, they need to be rebuilt before that date. Details in our post on call ads ending.

What is a call asset?

A call asset adds your phone number to your ads. On a phone, a clickable call button appears under the ad; on desktop, a "Call us" button shows the number with a QR code that opens the phone's dialer. A click on it costs the same as a headline click. Google says call assets do not show with every impression, and you can schedule the number to appear only when you can answer. See tracking calls from Google.

Why was my ad disapproved for an unverified phone number?

Google checks that the number in a call asset represents the business. It warns that ads are disapproved for "Unverified Phone Number" if the number is not in E.164 format, such as +12345678900 with no spaces, or if that exact number is not visible in your website's source code and your domain is not verified in Search Console. Vanity, premium and fax numbers are not accepted. See the call assets post and Search Console for local business.

Can my ad show my address and a map?

Yes, through location assets. For locations you own, the data source can be your Google Business Profile, so the ad can show your address, a map or the distance to you. Link the right Business Profile account, and note that Google allows only one location asset type per account. Setup notes are in Google Ads for local business.

Can ads run only on the days and hours we answer the phone?

Yes. An ad schedule picks the days and hours ads can show, or adjusts bids by time. Two things to watch: schedules use your Google Ads account's time zone, and the campaign still paces toward a monthly spend based on the daily budget, so fewer hours does not automatically mean less spend. See Google Ads for local business.

If I spend more on ads, will my free listing move up?

No. Google says advertising has no effect on your presence in its search results, and that there is no way to pay for a better local ranking on Maps. Ads and organic results are separate systems on purpose. Ads can reach areas where your profile does not rank yet, but they do not push the profile up. See local SEO vs Google Ads.

Can you run my ads in French for Quebec customers?

We work in English, French and Spanish, so a French campaign is something we can build. Whether you need one, or a bilingual setup, depends on who your customers are and how they search, and we scope that on the strategy call rather than assuming. See Google and Meta ads.

LOCATION TARGETING

9 questions
What is the difference between "Presence" and "Presence or interest"?

Presence or interest reaches people in, regularly in, or who have shown interest in your locations; Google calls it broad geo targeting and it is the default. Presence reaches only people in or regularly in your locations. If customers must be physically in your area, Presence avoids paying for people elsewhere who are only researching your town. We check this setting on every campaign. See Google Ads for local business.

Why am I getting clicks from people nowhere near my business?

Usually the location option. The default includes people who have shown interest in your area, not only people in it. Google also estimates location from signals such as IP address and device location, so it is never exact, and it may show ads in nearby, closely related areas. Switching to Presence and reviewing the location report normally fixes most of it. See location-based advertising.

Should I target a radius or list the cities I serve?

A radius is quick to set around your address and suits walk-in businesses. Cities or postal codes follow the boundaries you actually serve and make it easier to exclude the places you do not, which suits service-area trades. Many campaigns end up with named areas plus a short exclusion list. See Google Ads for local business.

Can I block ads from showing in areas I refuse to serve?

Yes. Google Ads lets you exclude locations as well as target them. We also add the names of towns outside your area as negative keywords, so a search like "plumber [other town]" does not trigger the ad even when the searcher is inside your radius. See match types and negative keywords.

How small can a radius be?

Google requires a radius of at least 1 km. Tighter than that is not an option in Google Ads, and location is estimated anyway, so treat any boundary as approximate. If you need a very small area around a venue, that is closer to what third-party geofencing vendors sell, with its own privacy questions. See geofencing and location-based ads.

Is location targeting exact?

No. Google says location is estimated from signals like IP address and device location, and that it may show ads to people in nearby, closely related areas. So a boundary is a strong preference, not a wall. Naming the place in the ad, for example "for homeowners in [your town]", helps the right people self-select. See location-based advertising.

I go to customers' homes and have no storefront. How do we target the ads?

We target the areas you actually drive to, as cities or postal codes, rather than a radius around a home address you do not want published. Google also says a service-area business should have its Business Profile set up that way, and it points to Local Services Ads as another route, so we usually compare both. See Google Maps ads and Local Services Ads.

Can ads reach people visiting my city, not only residents?

Yes. The Presence option covers people who are in your area, which includes visitors, and Presence or interest adds people elsewhere who have shown interest in it. Which one fits depends on whether someone has to be nearby to use you. A restaurant may want visitors; a plumber usually does not want distant researchers. See Google Ads for local business.

Do the targeting rules differ between the US and Canada?

In places. For housing, jobs and credit ads, Google bans ZIP code targeting in both countries, but in Canada the first three characters of a postal code are acceptable. Local Services Ads categories differ by country, message and booking leads are US and Canada only, and Google forwarding numbers for call tracking exist only in certain countries. We check your country's pages before building. See Google Ads for local business.

BUDGETS AND BIDDING

10 questions
How does the daily budget actually work?

You set an average daily budget per campaign. On a given day Google may spend up to twice that amount to catch traffic swings, but you will not be charged more than 30.4 times the daily budget in a month. So uneven days are normal, and the number to watch is the monthly total. Several campaigns can also draw on one shared budget. See Google Ads budget for local business.

I have a monthly amount in mind. How do I turn it into a daily budget?

Divide the monthly amount by 30.4, which is the average number of days in a month and the multiplier Google uses for its monthly cap. That keeps the month inside what you can afford even when individual days run over. Google's own advice after setting a new budget is to start small and check the account daily. See Google Ads budget for local business.

Which bid strategy should a new account start with?

It depends on what is tracked. Before calls and forms are counted, Maximize clicks gets traffic while you watch search terms closely. Once calls, forms and bookings are tracked as conversions, Maximize conversions makes sense. Target CPA suits accounts that know what a lead is worth and have conversion history. Manual CPC gives tight control over a small keyword set. See Google Ads budget for local business.

Do I need conversion tracking before using Smart Bidding?

Yes. Conversion-based strategies optimize toward the actions you mark as Primary, so without tracking Smart Bidding has nothing to learn from. Google also says it is critical to use Smart Bidding with broad match, which is why we set up call and form tracking before widening keywords. See tracking phone calls from Google.

Does Target ROAS make sense for a local shop?

Mostly when your sales carry values the account can see, such as online orders. A plumber whose conversion is a phone call has no order value to optimize toward, so Target CPA or Maximize conversions fits better. If you sell online, we can talk through whether values can be passed to Google Ads. See Google Ads budget for local business.

Google keeps telling me to raise my budget. Should I?

Treat it as a suggestion. Google bases budget recommendations on recent campaign performance, and its interest is more spend. Judge any increase against booked jobs, not clicks or impressions. If the current budget is producing jobs at a cost you can live with, scaling makes sense; if not, fix search terms and the landing page first. See Google Ads budget for local business.

How do I decide in advance when to stop or scale a test?

Write the rule down before spending. For example: if spend reaches a set multiple of what a lead is worth to you with no booked calls, pause and review the search terms and landing page rather than raising the budget. If leads come in below what a job is worth, scale gradually. Having the rule stops the account being judged on emotion. See Google Ads budget for local business.

How do I work out what a lead is worth to me?

Start with your average job value and how many enquiries become jobs. Only you have those numbers. Together they set what you can afford to pay per lead, and that is the figure a budget and a Target CPA should be built around. We ask for both on the strategy call. See Google Ads budget for local business.

Can I see real click costs for my area before spending anything?

Yes. Google's Keyword Planner shows search volume estimates, average costs for keywords, and forecasts of clicks and conversions based on spend. It also suggests keyword ideas. Google notes that bid, budget, ad quality, location targeting and other factors all affect real results, so treat it as a sizing tool, not a promise. See Google Ads budget for local business.

Is there a minimum ad spend you require?

We do not publish one, because the right starting budget depends on click costs in your area and what a lead is worth to you. We go through plans, pricing and how budgets work on the strategy call so you know the full cost before anything runs. Ad spend is separate from plan fees. See Google Ads budget for local business.

KEYWORDS, MATCH TYPES AND NEGATIVES

8 questions
What are the three keyword match types?

Broad match, written plainly, can show on searches related to your keyword, including some that do not contain its direct meaning. Phrase match, in quotes, shows on searches that include the meaning of the keyword. Exact match, in square brackets, shows on searches with the same meaning or intent. Each broader type captures everything the narrower ones do, plus more. See match types and negative keywords.

Why do you start my keywords narrow?

Because a new account has few conversions, and Smart Bidding needs real conversions to learn from. Phrase and exact keywords for your core services keep early spend on searches you understand. Google says Smart Bidding is critical with broad match, so we try broad match only once call and form tracking is working. See match types and negative keywords.

Why did my ad show for a search I had blocked?

Usually a variant. Negative keywords do not match close variants, plurals or synonyms, so blocking "job" does not block "jobs" or "hiring". Google also notes that a negative placed after the 16th word of a long search may not block it. Add the variants yourself and review the search terms report. See match types and negative keywords.

Do negative keywords match the same way as normal keywords?

No. Negative broad blocks a search that contains all your terms in any order; negative phrase blocks the exact terms in the same order; negative exact blocks the exact terms in the same order with nothing extra. None of them catch close variants, so add plurals and synonyms explicitly. See match types and negative keywords.

Which negative keywords should nearly every local business add?

Common themes, to check against what you sell: jobs (jobs, hiring, career, salary, apprenticeship); do-it-yourself (DIY, how to, tutorial, manual, parts if you do not sell parts); free and training (free, course, class, certification, school); services you do not offer, such as commercial if you only do residential; and towns outside your area. Save them as a list and apply it across campaigns. See match types and negative keywords.

What is the search terms report, and how often should it be read?

It shows the searches a significant number of people used that led to your ad showing, and which keyword matched. Read it weekly while a campaign is new: add irrelevant terms as negatives, and add terms that turned into calls as keywords. It is the fastest way to stop paying for clicks you never wanted. See match types and negative keywords.

Should all my services sit in one ad group?

No. Keep "drain cleaning" and "water heater repair" in separate ad groups so each ad and landing page matches the search. Mixed ad groups produce generic ads that fit nobody's search, and the landing page quality that feeds Ad Rank suffers. See match types and negative keywords.

Can I keep my ads off searches for a brand name?

Yes. Brand exclusions are available for Search and Performance Max, and the campaign will not serve for queries associated with a brand you exclude. It is useful if a big brand's searches keep triggering your ads and wasting budget. See Performance Max for local business.

PERFORMANCE MAX

10 questions
What is Performance Max?

Google's goal-based campaign type that can use all Google Ads inventory, including YouTube, Display, Search, Discover, Gmail and Maps, from one campaign. You supply text, images and video, choose the conversion actions you care about, and can add a ROAS or CPA target; Google's AI decides where and to whom the ads show. Google positions it as a complement to Search campaigns, not a replacement. See Performance Max for local business.

If I add Performance Max, should I switch off my Search campaign?

No. Google describes Performance Max as complementing keyword-based Search campaigns, and says a Search campaign with an exact match keyword is prioritized over Performance Max when a query hits that keyword. Keeping Search gives you tight control over the high-intent searches that usually drive calls. See Performance Max for local business.

What does Performance Max need from me before it can run?

Working conversion tracking, because it optimizes toward the goals you choose; real text, images and video, using photos and footage you own or have licensed; a budget big enough to spread across many channels; and careful location targeting. If any of those is missing, we fix it first or start with Search. See Performance Max for local business.

What is Performance Max for store goals?

A version built for businesses with locations. You define your locations by linking your Business Profile, then provide a budget and ad assets. It aims to maximize in-store value using store visits, store sales and local actions such as call and direction clicks. Get your Business Profile right first, because the campaign relies on it. See Performance Max for local business and optimize your Business Profile.

What are "local actions" in a Performance Max report?

Google defines them as local engagements like call and direction requests. They can include clicks for directions, calls, website visits and, for some business types, orders and menu views. They show intent, not a visit or a sale, so we judge the campaign against real bookings and sales rather than the local actions count. See Performance Max for local business.

How much control do I have over which searches Performance Max shows for?

Less than a Search campaign, but not none. Negative keywords apply to its Search and Shopping inventory, brand exclusions stop it serving on a brand's queries, search themes tell Google which searches your customers use, and location targeting works as in any campaign. Audience signals are optional and do not limit delivery. See Performance Max for local business.

What are search themes?

Searches you tell Google your customers use, up to 50 per asset group. Google gives them the same priority as phrase and broad match keywords in Search campaigns, so they are the closest thing Performance Max has to keywords. We build them from the search terms that already produce calls. See Performance Max for local business.

Can I see which searches Performance Max showed my ads for?

Google says search terms reporting is available for all Performance Max campaigns. Reporting for this campaign type changes often, so we check the current help page rather than relying on last year's screenshots. We use the report the same way as in Search: add junk as negatives, promote winners to search themes. See Performance Max for local business.

Does a direction click mean someone actually came in?

No. Direction and call clicks show intent, not a visit or a sale. Store visit conversions are enabled automatically only for accounts that meet Google's eligibility criteria, so most small businesses should not count on them. Judge the campaign against real bookings and sales. See Google Maps ads.

Can a service business with no storefront use store goals?

Check Google's current store goals help page for eligibility before planning around it, because the campaign is built around store locations linked from your Business Profile. For trades that serve customers at home, Local Services Ads or a tightly targeted Search campaign is usually the better comparison. See Performance Max for local business.

LOCAL SERVICES ADS

22 questions
How is paying for Local Services Ads different from Search ads?

Local Services Ads charge per lead related to your business and services, not per impression or click. Search ads charge per click in an auction. Google says lead prices vary by location, job type, lead type and bidding mode. Many eligible service businesses run both: Local Services Ads for leads, Search for the keywords and areas they do not cover. See Google Local Services Ads.

Is my trade eligible for Local Services Ads?

Eligible categories are limited and differ by country. Google's Canada overview lists trades such as plumbing, electrical, HVAC, cleaning, lawn care, roofing and locksmiths; the US list is longer. Check your own country and category on Google's help centre, or bring it to the call and we check. See Google Local Services Ads.

What counts as a lead I get charged for?

A valid phone conversation, a valid message or email (US and Canada only), and a valid booking request (US and Canada only). A missed call you return can be charged too, but only when you make meaningful contact. Google says message leads are typically cheaper than calls. See Google Local Services Ads.

What do I do when a Local Services lead is junk?

Report it through that lead's feedback survey. Google assesses leads when the customer first makes contact, does not charge ones it finds invalid, and may credit charged leads later if its models decide they were low quality. Read Google's current lead-credit page before disputing, because the rules change. See Google Local Services Ads.

Which Local Services leads will Google not credit?

A valid lead received outside your business hours, a customer asking for advice rather than the service, a cancelled booking, price research, a customer who does not reply to your follow-up, and service mismatches. Google has also stopped crediting "job type not serviced" and "geo not serviced" leads, so set your job types and service area to match what you really do. See Google Local Services Ads.

I got a lead credit but the charge is still on my invoice. Was I double-charged?

Probably not. Google says a credit is usually applied to your account balance within 30 days, and that the original lead charge still appears on the invoice. Read the invoice and the balance together before concluding you were charged twice. See Google Local Services Ads.

Are lead credits available in every country and category?

No. Automatic lead credits are available only in the United States and Canada, and not for health care, tax specialists or advertisers in EMEA. If you are outside those limits, budget on the assumption that disputes will not be credited automatically. See Google Local Services Ads.

What is the Google Verified badge?

A badge on Local Services Ads showing your business completed Google's screening. It replaced the earlier badges, and it is not available in every category. What screening involves differs by category and country, so read your own category's page. Google has said the badge change did not affect ranking. See Google Local Services Ads.

What happened to the Google Guarantee?

Google replaced the old badges with a single Google Verified badge and discontinued the Money Back Guarantee that was tied to the Google Guarantee badge. Advertisers who had completed verification earned the new badge automatically. If your website, trucks or quotes still promise customers a "Google Guarantee", update them. See our post on the new requirements.

Does how fast I answer affect my Local Services ranking?

Yes. It is the ranking lever Google names outright: if you regularly fail to answer calls or respond to messages, your ad ranking may be affected. Answer during the hours you set, and respond to every message even if the answer is no, because declining still counts as responding. See Google Local Services Ads.

Can I get leads before my badge is issued?

Yes. Google lets you start receiving leads while onboarding finishes, but pre-badge ads appear below fully verified providers in results. Treat that period as a soft start rather than a test of what the ads can do. See Google Local Services Ads.

What has to be in place before Local Services Ads will serve?

Google lists a licence or business registration, an acknowledgement that you hold the appropriate business licences, reviews subject to your category's requirements, and completed billing with a budget. Ads run on a weekly budget with a bidding maximum set at billing setup, and that is changing as accounts move into Google Ads. See Google Local Services Ads.

Do I need reviews before Local Services Ads will run?

Google lists reviews among the basic setup requirements, and the number depends on your category. Ask real customers for honest reviews and never buy or incentivize them, because that breaks platform rules and can get an account suspended. See how to get more Google reviews.

Local Services Ads are moving into Google Ads. What actually changes for me?

You still pay per lead, ads still show only on Search and Maps, and there are still no keywords. What changes: weekly budgets become daily (weekly divided by 7, capped monthly at 30.4 times), setting a maximum cost per lead is no longer supported, each campaign gets one Target CPA, your Business Profile name, address and hours sync daily into the campaign, BBB callouts go, and old reports do not migrate. See our migration post.

When will my Local Services account be migrated?

Google is doing it in phases: August 2026 for select US home and storefront service advertisers, late 2026 for broader groups including service-area businesses without storefronts, and 2027 for non-US accounts and remaining categories. Your own date comes by email to the account administrator 14 days before, with banners in the dashboard and a reminder 7 days later. See our migration post.

What should I do before the Local Services migration?

Save your history, because past impressions, weekly spend and ad-level reports will not move. Check who the administrator is, since the notice goes to them. Fix your Business Profile name and address now, because big changes after migration trigger a review that may pause ads. Decide whether you need separate campaigns for separate cost-per-lead targets, and pick six callouts to replace BBB ones. See our migration post.

Do I keep my badge and lead history after the migration?

Yes. Google says past lead history, including customer contact details, message history and older call recordings, transfers to a new Leads page in Google Ads. If you completed business verification, your verified status and Google Verified badge transfer automatically, and insurance and licence reverification are not required. See our migration post.

Why did my new campaign look worse right after migration?

Google says to allow up to two weeks for the migration to complete and for performance to ramp back to stable levels, so the first days are not a fair reading. That is also why saving your pre-migration lead counts and cost per lead matters: it is the only baseline you will have. See our migration post.

Can I use AI-generated photos on my Local Services profile?

Not if you advertise in the European Union or New York state. From August 2, 2026, Google does not allow AI-edited or AI-generated images there, and by uploading you attest to that. The word "edited" matters: a real job photo with the sky swapped by an AI tool is covered. Plain, lightly corrected photos of your own work are the safe choice. See the requirements post.

Why was my van photo rejected on Local Services Ads?

Most often because of a phone number in the image. Google's photo rules do not allow phone numbers anywhere in a picture, including on vehicles, uniforms or storefronts, nor email or street addresses, another business's watermark, blurry or screenshot images, or duplicates. Photos must be at least 640 by 640 and no more than 10 MB. See the requirements post.

Can I pass Local Services leads to a partner company?

No. Google's requirements say leads must be fulfilled by you or your vetted technicians. Passing or selling leads to another business, or advertising for call centres that reroute requests, is not allowed, and the rules apply to your employees and contractors too. Several violations, or one serious one, can suspend the account. See the requirements post.

Can I charge a trip fee on a Local Services job?

Google's requirements do not ban trip or diagnostic fees, but they must be disclosed, and customers must be told they pay them regardless of further work. Low estimates followed by unusually high charges, or raising the price on arrival without a significantly different scope, are violations. Make sure whoever answers the phone discloses fees every time. See the requirements post.

CONVERSION AND CALL TRACKING

12 questions
What should count as a conversion for a local business?

A submitted form, a phone call, a booking or an order. A page view is not a lead. We set those actions up as conversions before spending, mark the ones that matter as Primary, and keep the list short so the reports show customers and not only clicks. See Google Analytics 4 setup.

How does Google count a phone call from an ad?

Through call reporting. Google shows a forwarding number on the ad's call asset, counts the call, and can record it as a conversion when it lasts longer than a length you set. It can also tell you which keywords, ads, ad groups and campaigns led to call conversions. See tracking phone calls from Google.

Can calls from my website be tied back to the ad that brought the visitor?

Yes. Google can show a dynamically generated forwarding number on your site only to people who arrived from an ad, and count calls to it as conversions, along with clicks on your number on a mobile site. Everyone else sees your normal number. Forwarding numbers are available only in certain countries, so check Google's list. See tracking phone calls from Google.

What minimum call length should we set?

Google lets you choose it. Pick the shortest call that could realistically be a booking for your trade, so wrong numbers and hang-ups drop out while a genuine two-minute enquiry still counts. We set it with you and adjust once real calls come in. See tracking phone calls from Google.

Will call tracking break my Business Profile phone number?

Not if done properly. Google's Business Profile guidelines say the number must be under the business's direct control and not redirect to other numbers, so we keep one main number on your profile, site footer, schema and listings. Google Ads forwarding numbers are shown dynamically to ad visitors only, so the published number stays the same for everyone else. See tracking phone calls from Google.

Do I need a separate call tracking company?

Not always. Google Ads call reporting and GA4 key events cover many small businesses. A third-party tracking number on your Business Profile is where owners get into trouble, so whatever you use, keep the listing number within Google's guidelines. See tracking phone calls from Google.

Why does my profile show more calls than my phone log?

Because Google's Business Profile call metric is the number of times someone clicked the call button, not completed calls. Treat profile and click counts as intent, and call-length conversions from Google Ads as the stronger signal. See tracking phone calls from Google.

How does Google Analytics 4 fit with Google Ads?

You link the two, which needs editor or admin on the Analytics property and administrative access to the Ads account, then import key events into Google Ads so it reports and bids on the same leads Analytics counts. Auto-tagging must be on. Google says Ads link data can take up to 48 hours to flow. See Google Analytics 4 setup.

Who should own the Analytics account?

Your business. Create it with a Google login the business owns and add your agency as a user. We set it up in your name, test each event and show you the one report worth checking each month. Do not let anyone else own your data. See Google Analytics 4 setup.

A form came in but the ads report shows no conversion. Why?

Enhanced measurement in GA4 can miss form submissions. Test by submitting your own form and checking the event appears; if it does not, send a dedicated event from your thank-you page or form tool instead. Ads data can also lag up to 48 hours after linking. See Google Analytics 4 setup.

Can bookings made through a separate booking tool be tracked?

If the tool sends people to a confirmation page on your site, that page view becomes the event. If the booking happens on the tool's own domain, it depends on what tracking that tool supports, so we check before promising a number. See Google Analytics 4 setup.

LANDING PAGES AND YOUR WEBSITE

7 questions
Where should the ad send people?

To a fast page built to convert, with the service the ad promised, a clear phone number and an easy way to call, book or order. Ads send people somewhere, and the page decides whether the click becomes a customer. If you do not have one, we can build the site in 24 to 48 hours. See 48-hour websites.

Does my landing page affect what I pay per click?

Yes. Google's Ad Rank uses the quality of your ads and landing page alongside your bid, so a slow or vague page can cost you position and money. The same clear service page also helps organic visitors, which is why we share one landing page standard across ads and SEO. See local SEO vs Google Ads.

Does page speed matter for ads?

Yes. Landing page quality feeds Ad Rank, and most local searches happen on a phone, so a page that loads slowly on mobile wastes paid clicks. Every site we build is mobile-first and built to be fast. See website speed and Core Web Vitals.

Should each service have its own landing page?

Usually yes. Ad groups are split by service so the ad matches the search, and the landing page should match the ad. A drain cleaning ad landing on a general plumbing page loses people. For businesses covering several towns, service-area pages do the same job by location. See local landing pages.

Should the ad send people to a lead form inside Facebook or to my own page?

Neither is always better. Instant forms are quicker to fill in; your own page gives people more information first and is measured with the Pixel and Conversions API. Track which one produces booked jobs, not which produces more form fills. See Meta ads for local business.

Can the search terms from my ads tell me what to put on my website?

Yes. The search terms that turn into booked jobs are good topics for your service pages, and the same page then serves both paid and organic visitors. It is one of the practical ways ads data guides local SEO content. See local SEO vs Google Ads.

Is it a problem if my phone number is only an image on my site?

Yes. For call assets, Google wants the exact number visible in your site's source code in E.164 format, or your domain verified in Search Console, or the ad can be disapproved. A number in an image also cannot be tapped or tracked as a click-to-call event. Put it in text as a phone link. See the call assets post.

MAPS ADS, GEOFENCING AND META

11 questions
Can I run ads only on Google Maps?

No. Google says you currently cannot serve ads exclusively in Google Maps; the campaign types that reach Maps may automatically serve on other surfaces too. Google lists four Maps formats: promoted pins, map search ads, map suggest ads and placesheet ads. See Google Maps ads.

What are promoted pins?

Square ad pins on the map that stand out from the usual round pins, shown when people browse, search, view directions or navigate. Google says they need your Business Profile linked to Google Ads, and they do not show when the map is zoomed out. Your ad may show as a pin without also appearing in Maps search results. See Google Maps ads.

Why can't I see my ad on Maps?

Google's own checklist: is your profile linked and verified, is the location asset approved, is the campaign active and targeting the right area, are you zoomed in far enough for pins, and is the search relevant to your keywords? Other advertisers may also win the limited slots. See Google Maps ads.

Will a Maps ad fix my wrong pin or address?

No. Google says local search ads are different from your organic listing; a wrong address or pin is a Business Profile problem and has to be fixed there. Ads sit on top of the profile, they do not repair it. See Business Profile setup.

When is a third-party geofencing product worth paying for?

Last, and only with a budget you can afford to lose while testing. Get found for free first, then capture search demand with tightly targeted Search ads, then track calls and forms. Geofencing can suit a business with a clear place to target, such as a home show or event. Ask any vendor where its location data comes from and how consent was collected. See geofencing and location-based ads.

Can I target people who visit my competitor's shop?

Location settings can include a radius around any address, so in that narrow sense yes. Keep the ads honest: do not name or disparage a competitor, and read each platform's policies first. Whether it is worth the money is a different question. See geofencing and location-based ads.

Can I geofence the hospital or church near my clinic?

No, and we will not set it up whatever a vendor allows. Clinics, hospitals, places of worship, shelters, schools and protests are off limits. In January 2024 the US Federal Trade Commission ordered two data brokers to stop selling data tied to sensitive locations. Privacy laws vary by state, province and country; this is general information, not legal advice. See geofencing and location-based ads.

When do Meta ads make more sense than Google Search ads?

When you want to reach people before they search. Google Search catches someone typing what you sell; Facebook and Instagram put your dishes, specials, events or new services in front of nearby people who were not looking yet. That suits openings, new menus and events. Both let you limit ads to the area you serve. See Meta ads for local business.

Why does Meta report a different number of leads than I counted?

Browser tracking can miss events. Meta recommends running the Conversions API alongside the Pixel, sending events from your server with a matching event name and event ID so duplicates are removed. Install the Pixel on every page, then test. And judge on booked jobs, not the platform's count. See Meta ads for local business.

How should we test Meta ad creative?

Change one thing at a time, the hook, the image or the offer, so you know what made the difference. Use real photos you have rights to, never another business's. Give each test enough time and spend before calling a winner, judge on cost per lead and booked jobs rather than likes, and refresh creative when results slip. See Meta ads for local business.

Do Meta ads have location targeting like Google?

Yes, set at the ad set level: countries, regions, cities, postal codes or a radius around an address. Radius limits and available options vary by country and change, so we check Meta's current help page before building. Housing, employment and credit ads must declare a Special Ad Category, which limits targeting. See Meta ads for local business.

ACCOUNT OWNERSHIP AND ACCESS

5 questions
What access level should you have on my Google Ads account?

Standard access, which Google says can edit campaigns. You keep Admin, which can give access and change access levels. Google also recommends more than one admin on the account so access is not lost if one person becomes unavailable. See how to choose a local SEO agency.

My old agency set up the Google Ads account. Is it mine?

Ask them for Admin access or ownership before anything else, because the history and conversion data live in that account. Our comparisons list the ownership, contract and reporting questions to ask any provider. We run ads only in accounts your business owns, and we go through the options on the call if the old account cannot be recovered. See our comparisons.

Who receives Google's emails about my ad account?

The account administrator. That matters for notices like the Local Services migration email, which goes out 14 days before the date. If the administrator is a former employee or an old agency, fix that first, or the notice goes to someone who will not act on it. See our migration post.

Do I pay Google directly for the ad spend?

Ad spend is a pass-through cost, your responsibility and separate from plan fees, as set out in our Terms of Service. The account is in your business's name, and we cover how billing and budgets are set up on the strategy call so you know the full cost before anything runs.

What happens to my campaigns if I cancel?

The account and its history stay with your business, because it was always yours. After cancellation we may deactivate campaigns we manage on your behalf and may delete stored materials after 30 days, so export anything you want to keep. Services continue through the period you have paid for. See our Terms of Service.

WHAT WE MANAGE AND REPORT

11 questions
What do you actually do on my ads each month?

Check the reports, including where results come from by location, review the search terms and add negatives, adjust bids, budgets and ads, and send monthly reporting on calls, clicks and customers. The accounts are in your name, so you can look inside at any time. See Google and Meta ads.

Do you write the ads?

Yes. Building the campaigns includes the ad copy, the keywords, the negatives, the assets and the location targeting, and campaigns and copy are among the deliverables described in our Terms of Service. We write from what you sell and how your customers search, then adjust from the search terms report.

Do you set up tracking before or after the ads start?

Before. Calls, forms and bookings are set up as conversions first, so reports show customers and not only clicks, and so Smart Bidding has something to optimize toward from day one. Spending before tracking means paying for a month you cannot judge. See tracking phone calls from Google.

Can you take over an account that is already running?

Yes. Bring your account questions to the strategy call and we walk through them. Most wasted local ad spend comes from settings rather than ads: the wrong location option, no negative keywords, no conversion tracking. Those are the first things we check. See Google Ads for local business.

Can you manage my Local Services Ads once they move into Google Ads?

Yes. Watching the migration, choosing the campaign structure, replacing callouts, keeping lead disputes going and comparing cost per lead against your Search campaigns are part of our Google Ads management. Having all Google spend in one account makes that comparison easier. See our migration post.

Will you handle the switch from call-only ads to call assets?

Yes. We record your calls, cost and cost per call first, add the phone numbers as call assets, build the responsive search ad in the same ad group, run both side by side until the new ad is approved and getting calls, then remove the old one, with call reporting on. Do not leave it to January 2027. See the call ads post.

What is in the monthly ads report?

Calls, clicks and customers, and where they came from, so you can see what the spend is doing. Not impressions dressed up as results. If a market or campaign is not producing, the report says so and the budget moves toward the ones that are. See client acquisition.

Will you tell me if ads are the wrong move for my business?

Yes. Paid ads suit local businesses that want to reach people searching now in the areas they serve. They are not a fit if you need guaranteed results, because ad platforms run auctions. On the strategy call we outline the campaigns we would run, or tell you to start somewhere else. See Google and Meta ads.

Which plan includes ads management?

Dominate adds ads, full social management and client acquisition campaigns. Launch is for a shop with no website, and Growth adds local SEO, content and reporting. Ad spend itself is separate from every plan fee. What each plan includes is on the homepage, and we help you pick on the call. See book a call.

Can I get ads management without the website or local SEO?

Yes. You can take one piece or all of them. That said, ads work best alongside local SEO and a fast website, because the page the ad lands on decides whether the click becomes a customer. We will say so on the call if we think the site is the bottleneck. See Google and Meta ads.

Who do I call when something in the account breaks?

The people who build and run your campaigns, not an account manager reading a script. They answer your calls, nights included. Email is our official channel for anything about your account, so put changes in writing as well. See about us.

ADS OR LOCAL SEO, AND HONEST FIT

7 questions
I need jobs this month. Is that an ads situation?

Usually. Local SEO has no set timeline, so if cash flow depends on new jobs soon, a small, tightly targeted ads test can fill the gap while the free channels build. Set tracking first so you can judge it on booked jobs. See local SEO vs Google Ads.

My profile doesn't show in the next town over. Can ads reach it?

Yes. Distance is part of how Google ranks local results, so a profile often will not show for towns further out. Ads let you choose the areas you target, so they can reach towns where your profile does not appear yet. See local SEO vs Google Ads.

I am brand new with no reviews. Should I start with ads?

Start with the free base: a verified Business Profile, because it costs nothing to appear and feeds both approaches. Then, if you need calls now, a small tracked Search test. Ads can show once approved, but a new business with no reviews and no clear page will pay for clicks that do not convert. See Business Profile setup.

Will good local SEO make my ads cheaper?

Not by itself. Ad Rank uses your bid and the quality of your ads and landing page, not your organic ranking. Where the two overlap is the landing page: one clear, fast service page helps both. See local SEO vs Google Ads.

How should I compare ads against local SEO fairly?

By booked jobs, not clicks or impressions. Share one landing page standard, track calls and forms in both, watch free performance in Search Console, and review each channel before scaling. Search terms that produce jobs in ads also make good topics for your service pages. See Search Console for local business.

Are ads a fit for a restaurant?

Often. Search ads show when someone types a cuisine, "takeout" or "brunch", so they catch people ready to choose, and location targeting keeps them local. Meta ads work earlier, for openings and specials. The point is to measure calls, direction requests, bookings and online orders, not clicks, and we do not promise a cost per order. See restaurants.

Are ads a fit for a home-service trade?

Usually, in two forms. Local Services Ads, if your trade is eligible where you work, charge per lead. Google Ads covers the searches and areas Local Services Ads does not, with location targeting set to the area you serve and calls tracked. Many trades run both. Nobody can guarantee a lead count or cost per lead. See home services.

RULES AND RESTRICTED CATEGORIES

5 questions
I am a mortgage broker, landlord or hiring staff. What targeting is off limits?

Google's personalized advertising policy limits housing, employment and credit ads in the US and Canada: no targeting by gender, age, parental status or marital status, and no ZIP code targeting. Radius of at least 1 km, city and country targeting are allowed; in Canada the first three characters of a postal code are acceptable. Ads that break the rules can be restricted until fixed. This is a summary, not legal advice. See Google Ads for local business.

Are there extra ad limits for health businesses?

Yes. Google says advertisers in sensitive interest categories cannot use advertiser-curated audiences, and precise location data around clinics is treated as sensitive by regulators. Automatic Local Services lead credits also exclude health care. Confirm what applies to your clinic with your own advisor. See geofencing and location-based ads.

Can I put my phone number in the ad headline?

Better not. Google says putting a phone number in the ad text instead of using a call asset may lead to disapproval. Add the number as a call asset, where it is verified and can be tracked as a conversion. See Google Ads for local business.

Who is responsible if my ad breaks a platform rule?

Under our Terms of Service you agree to comply with every platform's advertising, review and privacy rules, and we may refuse a request we reasonably believe breaks them. In practice we build within the rules and tell you when something you ask for would not pass. Platforms change approval rules without notice, and we adjust and tell you what changed.

Can I use stock or borrowed photos in my ads?

Use photos and footage you own or have licensed, and never another business's photos. Performance Max runs on the assets you give it, Meta creative works best with your team, your work and your storefront, and Local Services Ads has its own photo rules including the AI image ban in the EU and New York. See Meta ads for local business.
