AI search: 14 questions
ChatGPT, AI Overviews and other AI answers, in plain English.
How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my business?
There is no form to submit and no way to pay for a recommendation. AI assistants lean on what the web says about you: your website, Google profile, reviews, directories and mentions on other sites. Make those clear, accurate and consistent, and answer real customer questions on your site. Nobody can promise you will be named.

Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my business?
Not as an organic recommendation. You cannot buy a place in ChatGPT's normal answers. Where AI tools show ads, they are labelled as ads and run through those platforms' ad programs. Be wary of anyone selling guaranteed AI recommendations. Your effort is better spent on accurate, helpful content.

What is AEO?
AEO stands for answer engine optimization: making your content easy for AI tools and search features to understand and quote. In practice it overlaps heavily with good SEO: clear pages, direct answers to real questions, accurate business details and a good reputation across the web.

What is the difference between AEO, GEO and SEO?
SEO is about ranking in search results. AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization) are newer names for being cited in AI answers such as ChatGPT or AI Overviews. The foundations are shared: useful content, accurate details and trust signals. The labels differ more than the work does.

Is AEO a real thing or just a buzzword?
The goal is real: AI tools now answer many questions directly, and businesses want to be part of those answers. But much of what is sold as AEO is ordinary SEO under a new name. Be cautious of anyone promising placement in AI answers; no one controls those systems.

How do I optimize my content for AI search?
Answer specific questions directly near the top of a page, use plain language, keep business details consistent everywhere, show who you are and where you work, and keep pages accurate. Make sure your site does not block search crawlers. Google says the same practices that help search help its AI features.

Can I use ChatGPT to market my business?
Yes, as a helper: drafting posts, brainstorming offers, outlining emails or summarizing reviews. Always check facts, keep your own voice, and never publish claims you cannot back up. AI drafts work best when someone who knows the business edits them.

Will AI replace web designers and marketing agencies?
AI already speeds up drafting and design, and it changes how the work gets done. But a business still needs someone to decide what to say, check facts, keep accounts and listings accurate and respond when something breaks. AI is a tool that changes the job more than it removes the need for it.

What is an AI receptionist?
An AI receptionist answers your phone, takes messages, answers common questions and can book appointments when you can't pick up. It works best for routine calls; complex or sensitive calls should still reach a person. Test it with real scenarios before going live.

Are free AI answering services good enough for a small business?
They can handle basic message-taking, but free tiers often limit minutes, features or customization, and you should check what happens to call data. Try it with real calls, listen to how it sounds to customers, and make sure urgent calls still reach you.

What is a virtual answering service?
It is a remote service that answers your business calls when you cannot, either with live people or with AI. It can take messages, book appointments or forward urgent calls. Compare cost per call or minute, hours covered and how messages reach you.

Should my business use ChatGPT for Business tools?
Business versions of AI tools can help staff draft emails, summarize documents and answer internal questions, with more control over data than personal accounts. Check what data you share and the provider's terms, and keep a person responsible for anything sent to customers.

Does Google AI Overviews show local businesses?
It can mention businesses and often draws on Business Profile data, reviews and websites. You cannot opt in or buy a spot. Keeping your profile complete and your website clear and accurate gives AI features better material about you. Results vary by search and change often.

Should I block AI crawlers from my website?
Usually not, if you want AI tools to know about your business. Blocking them can keep your content out of some AI answers. Some owners block certain bots for privacy or to protect paid content. Check your robots.txt so you are not blocking search engines by mistake.
