Google Maps and Business Profile: 11 questions

Getting found on Google Maps and keeping your profile healthy.

How do I get my business to show up on Google Maps?

Create or claim a Google Business Profile, verify it, choose the right primary category and fill in every relevant field: hours, services, photos and a link to your website. Your name, address and phone should match your website. Showing up is the first step; ranking well also depends on distance and how well known your business is.

Why is my Google Business Profile only visible to me?

Usually it is not verified yet, it is still under review after an edit, or it has been suspended or restricted. Signed in, you see your own profile in a way the public does not. Check the profile status in your Google account, finish verification if it is pending, and fix any flagged information.

How do I rank in the Google map pack without paying for ads?

The map pack is organic, so ads are not required. Focus on a complete, accurate profile, the best-fitting primary category, a website that matches the profile, steady honest reviews and consistent listings elsewhere. Progress depends on competition and distance, so there is no fixed timeline.

How do I check my Google Maps ranking for free?

Search your main service plus your town on a phone while in different parts of your area, signed out or in a private window. Results change by location, so one search from your shop is not the full picture. Your profile's performance data also shows searches and actions such as calls and direction requests.

Can I stop Google Maps from showing my home address?

Yes. If customers do not visit you, set the profile as a service-area business and hide the address. Google will show your service area instead. Your home still needs to be a real address you can verify, but it does not have to be public.
